TO ALLWHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

I Be it known that I, HENRY BASCH, of the city-of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents the front view of the lock. Figure 2, a vertical cross-section of the same along the line S S. Figure 3, the position of the bars.

The nature of my invention consists in a lock made of two parts, the lower part provided with notchedhorizontal bars sliding in grooves, and the upper part provided with a Vertically sliding notched bar, and the whole being so arranged that when the horizontal bars are placed in a certain position the vertical bar can pass through their notches, and thus to open or to close the-lock, as will be hereinafter fully explained.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. i

The upper part of the lock consists of a case, A, the back plate of which is provided on the inner side with slats a a, forming. a T-shapcd groove, in which bar B, of a T-shape, slides vertically, fitting said groove, and being provided with four notches, b I), a stop, P, and a knob, C, the last passing through and moving in the slot 1) cut in the face-plate of the case A. The lower part of the lock consists of a'case, E, the back plate of which on its inner side is provided with slats dd, forming a T-shaped groove to correspond to the slats aa'of the upper part of the lock. The face-plate of the case E on the inner side is provided with T-shaped horizontal rails F F, between which slide four horizontal bars G G, of .a T-shape also, each provided with one notch,f, and

a knob, y, to pass through and-move in one of the four horizontal slots-HH out in the face-plate of the case E. The left side plate K of the case E is hinged to the back plate of the same so that it may open or close, its projections-m and the notches n corresponding to the slots H H, andthe spaces between them. Each space between the slots H H and the space above the upper slot H has four marks, the same being numbered in i the vertical order. The bars G G are numbered also, the numbers being placed on their-knobbed ends. Thev notches ff of these bars are so disposed that when the knob of the bar N placed in the upper slot H is put opposite N of the plate, the knob of the bar N placed in the second slot H is put opposite N. of the plate, the knob of the bar N placed in the third slot His put opposite N of the plazaend the knob of the bar N* placed in the lower slot H is put opposite N of the plate, all the notchesff come into line S Set the sliding-bar B, so that the bar may freely slide up or down through the notches ff of thebars G G, and thus open or close the look. If it be desirable to change the places of the bars, and thus change the numbers of the plate for opening or closing the lock, then the knobs of the bars will be placed in difierent slots, but their places will correspond to the places indicated above. For instance, let the bar N be placed in the lower slot H, and the bar N in the upper slot H, then the knob of the upper bar shall be placed opposite N of'the plate,

the knobs of the two next bars shall beplaced in the some positions as before, and the knob ofthe lower bar shall be placed opposite .L of the plato,,and the lock will open or close. To make such changes conveniently.

the case E is provided with a hinged side plate, K, and the case, instead of being screwed to the trunk as the case A is, is simply secured to 'it by movable wedges NN passing through the loops M M secured to the outside of the back plate of the case'E, so that thc whole case E may easily be taken out of its place when the loc'k is open. The'numberof bars GG may be increased, if desirable. The lock is intended to be used on trunks, cases, boxes, &c., lite. I v V v What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, .is-

The combination of the grooved slats aa and'cld, grooved rails FF, and hinged plate K, with sliding T-shaped notched bars B and GG, and slots D and HH, constructed as described, thewhole arranged and operating substantially as and in the manner herein set forth and for the purpose specified.
