UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY DOBSON REESE, OF ABBEVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR TO D. ED. KENNEDY AND CHARLES C. OUTTS, OF OORDELE, GEORGIA, AND PARKER A. HENDERSON, OFSEVILLE, GEORGIA.
POCKET EYE-TESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of letters Patent No. 686,535, dated November 12, 1901.
Application filed November 17, 1900. Serial No, 36,862. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY DOBSON REEsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Abbeville,in the county of Abbeville and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Eye-Testers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to an improved pocket eye-tester; and its object is to provide a light compact device that can be readily carried in the pocket and to provide the same with certain new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
My device consists, essentially, in a tablet or card having an opening through which is visible a portion of a disk rotatively attached to said card and bearing suitable devices for testing the eyes and a tape adjustable in a slot in said card and having a suitable scale thereon and also provided with a loop for holding the end of the tape when using the device, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of a device embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a plan of the rotary disk.
Like letters refer to like parts in both of the figures.
A represents a card or tablet of any suitable dimensions, preferably made of cardboard, covered with some dark material, preferably bookbinders paper or cloth. Said card is provided with a suitable opening E, through which may be viewed a portion of the disk O,which disk is attached to the tablet A by a suitable rivet D and is rotative thereon.
To stiffen the structure and protect the disk, asecond cardBis placed behind the cardAand disk 0 and secured at the middle by the rivet D and suitable eyelets or other fastenings at each end. The disk 0 is of such diameter that it projects from between the cards A and B at each side thereof, whereby it may be conveniently rotated by grasping these projecting portions.
On the disk O are a series of paragraphs 0 in letters of various sizes and adapted to be displayed in succession through the openings E as the disk is rotated. These paragraphs are for convenience in calculating the focus of the required lenses appropriately numbered, as shown.
G is a tape of suitable dimensions adjustably inserted in a suitable slot F in the cards A and B. This tape bears a suitable scale I, whereby the distance of the card A from the eye is indicated. Said scale may be in inches and fractions; but I prefer a scale adapted to serve in conjunction with the index-numbers of the paragraphs to indicate the focus of the lenses required by the eye that is being tested. I do not, however, limit myself to any specific scale on the tape or numbering of the paragraphs on the disk.
H is a suitable loop of cord or other suitable material attached to one end of the tape G and adapted to engage the ear of the person whose eyes are being tested, this loop being of such length that the point from which the scale measures will be held opposite the eye, and thus properly indicate the distance of the card from the eye as the card is moved on the tape to test the focus of the eye.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- The combination of an eye-testing card having an opening, a tape longitudinally adjustable in the opening, a scale on the tape, and a loop on the tape adapted to engage the ear of a person, and to adjust the point from which the scale measures, opposite the eyes of such person, substantially as described.
In testimony'whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY DOBSON REESE.
