SIMON O. COLLIN, OF WISSAHIOKON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO \VILLIAM WHITE, J R., OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHARGING AND DRAWING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 686,508, dated November 12, 1901.
Application filed August 17, 1901. Serial No. 72,363. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may'concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON O. COLLIN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Wissahickon, city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Charging and DrawingApparatus; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear,'and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In my Letters Patent No; 565,434, issued August 11, 1896, is shown, described, and claimed an apparatus for charging and drawing metal to and from heating furnaces, which apparatus is comprised of a table composed of a series of rollers which receive and feed the billets orother metal bodies and a ram supported on the feeding-rollers and adapted to engage and feed the billet and to withdraw it from the furnace.
My present invention is directed to improvements on the apparatus which forms the subject-matter of my said Letters Patent, the improvements, broadly considered, consisting of a movable carrier, a conveyor on the carrier, and aram movably supported on the carrier independent of and adjacent to the conveyer.
One advantage possessed by my improvements resides in the increased facility for moving the metal over the table. The rollers in the present construction do not afford the support for the ram, and the path of the metal being unobstructed the metal may be rapidly conveyed from one end of the table to the other, the ram serving, through a gripping device, such as the usual tongs, to deliver the metal on the rollers and to finish the charge to the furnace by a ramming action when moved by the carrier in line with the metal and furnace-opening.
The nature of my improvements will be understood, reference being had to the following detailed description and to the accompanying drawings, in which frame mounted to be moved transversely by flanged wheels I) b on tracks 0 c. Mounted longitudinally on the movable carrier, toward one side thereof, is a series of feeding-rollers D D, to the shafts d d of which are secured beveled gear-wheels d d, which engage'beveled gear-wheelse e, commonly fixed to a shaft 6. Any suitable power means may be provided to drive the rollers D. I preferably employ, however, an electric motor F, the drive-shaft of which is geared to the shaft 6. there is employed to move the carrier an electric motor G, the driving-shaft of which is geared to an intermediate shaft h, and the latter is connected by gearing to the axles Similarly of the traction-wheels b, of which there are preferably two sets, as shown. I designates the ram, slidably mounted by flanged wheels j j on rails a a, arranged longitudinally of the carrier adjacent to the series of feeding-rollers and preferably forming a part of the. carrier-frame. On the under side of the ram and parallel with the sides thereof is a rack-bar t', which is en gaged by a pinion k, fixed to a shaft is, journaled transversely on the carrier. The shaft is connected by suitable gearing with the driving-shaft of an electric motor L or other source of power, and m is a friction-clutch interposed between the shaft 70 and the gear connection with the motor, whereby the r0- tation of the shaft is and pinion k and the consequent movements of the ram may be controlled by an operator.
The movable ram carries a platform at, which in practice is occupied by an operator, and on the ram are a number of pinso 0, to which is connected the chain of the metalgraspingtongs. (Notshowm) The tongs are preferably manipulated by the operator occupying the platform to grasp the billet, bloom, ingot, or other metal body, and by ICO means of a controller G the motor G is operated to move the carrier to bring the feedingrollers in line with the metal. The tongschain being connected with the ram, both the latter and the feeding-rollers are set in motion through the manipulations of controllers L and F, electrically connected, respectively, with the motors L and F, with the result of drawing the metal on the rotating rollers and feeding it by the latter partly into the heating-furnace opening. The charge is finished by the ram, which after the metal has left the rollers is brought by the movement of the carrier into line with the metal, whereupon the ram is set in motion, and the nose i thereof engaging the end of the metal the latter is forced into the furnace the desired extent.
It will be observed that the ram is movably supported independently of the feeding-rollers, and hence the ram at no time impedes the movement of the metal while being conveyed by the rollers. The path of the metal being unobstructed, it may be conveyed very speedily by the rollers over the table, and thus may be effected a material saving in time, labor, and expense incident to the operation.
After the metal has become heated in the furnace it is grasped by the tongs and drawn by the reverse movement of the ram on the rollers, the direction of rotation of which is reversed, and conveyed by the latter to the shaping-machine, the carrier being moved previously to the delivery of the metal on the rollers to bring the latter into proper alinement.
I claim as my invention 1. In an apparatus for charging and drawing metal to and from heating-furnaces, the combination of a movable carrier, feedingrollers 011 said carrier, and a movable ram mounted on the carrier out of the path of the metal but arranged to be brought into the path of the metal by movement of the carrier.
2. In an apparatus for charging and drawing metal to and from heating-furnaces, the combination of a movable carrier, feedingrollers on the carrier, tracks on the carrier at one side of the feeding-rollers, and a movable ram supported by Wheels on said tracks.
3. In an apparatus for charging and drawing metal to and from heating-furnaces, the combination of a movable carrier, feedingrollers on said carrier, 9. ram movably supported on the carrier independently of the feeding-rollers and a platform carried by the ram.
4. In an apparatus for charging and drawing metal to and from heating-furnaces, the combination of a movable carrier, feedingrollers on said carrier, a ram movably supported on the carrier independently of the rollers and movable into the path of the metal by movement of the carrier, and reversible power means including a clutch for moving the ram.
5. In an apparatus for charging and drawing metal to and from heating-furnaces, the combination of a movable carrier, a conveyer on the carrier, a ram movably mounted on the carrier and carrying pins, a rackbar and a nose, a pinion engaging the rack-bar, re versible power means including a frictionclutch for actuating the pinion, and power means for operating the conveyor and for moving the carrier.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SIMON C. COLLIN.
