SPECIFICATIN forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,504, dated July 10, 1900.

To all whom' it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR E. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,`formin'g a part of the same, in which- Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a furnace, showing the apparatus for feeding rods or billets to the furnace and withdrawing them therefrom. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 showeach a horizontal section of a portion of a furnace, showing the relative position of the rod or billet in its passage through the furnace, Fig. 2 showing the heated rod or billet at the point of its withdrawal from lthe furnace,.Fig. 3 showing the rod or billet after it has passed the feeding-rolls and is engaged by the pushrod, and Fig. 4t represents the rod or billet as being moved into the furnace by the action of the feed-rolls. Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of a furnace, showing the relative position of the feed and delivery rolls and also showing the apparatus for moving the series of rods or billets sidewise as they are successively fedinto the furnace in order to bring them successively into alinement with the delivery-rolls. Fig. 6 is a plan view`of a portion of the furnace, showing the top view of the feed-rolls by which the rods or billets are fed to the furnace. Fig. 7 is an end view showing the feeding mechanism, and Fig. 8 is a partial side elevation.

The object of my present invention is to provide means for feeding rods or billets to a heating-furnace and delivering the same when heated fron the furnace; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described, and set forth in the annexed claims.
Referring to the drawings, A denotes a heating-furnace inclosing a chamber A and provided with a iioor A2, which is substan'i tiallyhorizontal in the direction of the rods or billets contained therein, as represented in Fig. l, but preferably inclined at right arigles thereto, as indicated by the broken line A2, (shown in Fig. 7 in order to facilitate the Serial No. 625,804. (No model.)
sidewise movement of the billets. Against one of the walls of the heating-chamber is a sole-plate Bin alinement with the opening B in the wall. of the furnace, and in front of p the opening B are located a pair of feed-rolls,
consisting of an upper feed-roll B2 and a lower feed-roll B3. These rolls are shown in the end elevation representedin Fig. '7, and their position is indicated by the roll B2, Figs-.3', 4, and 5. in fixed bearings and is rotated by means of a chain connection with the driving-shaftB5"l The lower feed-roll BB is journaled in a yoke B6, mounted upon a piston inclosed in 2 hyf The upper feed-roll B2 is journaled draulic c ylinder B7 havin@ suitable connecpreferably having a forked end C', is entered.`
between the feed-rolls B2B8 with its end abutting the end of the rod C2. The forward movement of the push-bar, as actuated by the feed-rolls, continues the movement of the rod until it is carried wholly within the heatingchamber and upon the sole-plate B. When the rod has been pushed into the furnace, the push-bar C is withdrawn by hand after reversing the valve and opening the feed-rolls.
The Wall D'of the furnace is provided with a series of openings D' to receive the sliding bars D2, pivotally connected with arms D2, projecting from the rock-shaft D4, which is operatively connected with a hydraulic cylinder D5 to impart a sliding motion to the bars D2 against the rod which has been entered by the feed-rolls B2 B3 in order to push the rod off the sole-plate and make room for the reception of the next succeed ing rod. The continued action of the feed-rolls B2 and B3 and the sliding bars D2 distributes a series of rods or billets over the iioor of the furnace, as represented in Fig. 5.
I do not conne myself to the pushing mechanism comprising the sliding bars D2, hydraulic cylinder D5, and intermediate con IOO neeting mechanism, as any known mechanism for imparting a sidewise movement to the rods or billets may be employed.
Near the opposite end of the furnace from the sole-plate B the walls are provided with openings E and E', placed opposite each other. In front of the opening E is a pair of rolls consisting of an upper roll F and a lower roll F', the upper roll F being operatively driven by the driving-shaft B5 and the lower roll F being journaled in a yoke F2, mounted upon a piston inclosed in a hydraulic cylinder F3 and having its movements controlled by the hand-lever F4, so that the roll F can be raised or lowered similarly to the lower feed-roll B3. In front of the opening E' is a pair of positively-driven rolls G and G', journaled in a housing G2.
When the advancing rod of the series is brought into alinement with the openings E and E and has become suiiiciently heated, a push-bar II, similar to the push-bar C, is entered between the rolls F and F. The lower roll F is then raised to cause the push-bar to be carried forward with its end abutting the end of the forward rod or billet I in the series, as `shown in Figs. l and 2. The continued motion of the push-bar H pushes the rod I through the opening E', between the guides J, and into the bite of the rolls G and G', by which the heated rod is withdrawn from the furnace. 'lhe rolls F and F are then opened in order to withdraw the push-bar I-I and allow the series of rods in the furnace to be advanced bythe sliding bars D2 in order to bring another heated rod or billet into alinement with the openings E E.
The entire operation of entering the rods or billets is conducted by the attendant at the feed-rolls B2 B3, and the withdrawal of the rods is controlled by an attendant at the rolls F F'. Both attendants are located upon the side of the furnace opposite that at which the heated rods or billets are delivered, and they are therefore protected from the excessive heat incident to the removal of the heated metal from the furnace by the method now in common practice.
I am aware that a push-bar moved longitudinally by the contact of a pair of revolving rolls has been heretofore employed to impart an endwise movement to a billet within a heating-furnace, and I therefore do not claim such broadly.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with a furnace having an opening at one end to receive a rod, or billet, and a pairof openings placed opposite each other at the opposite, or delivery end of the furnace, of means for mechanically pushing the rod, or billet, through said admissionopening, means for mechanically pushing the rod, or billet, sidewise from the admission to the delivery end of the furnace, a pair of withdrawing-rolls placed opposite one of the openings at the delivery end of the furnace and means operating through the opposite opening for mechanically pushing the rod or billet into engagement with said rolls by which the rod, or billet, is withdrawn from the furnace, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a furnace having an opening at one end for the admission of a rod, or billet, and a pair of openings placed opposite each other at the opposite or delivery end of the furnace, of means for pushing the rod or billet from the admission to the delivery end of the furnace, a pair of withdrawingrolls placed opposite one of the openings at the delivery end of the furnace and adjacent thereto, guides by which the advancing end of the rod or billet is conducted from said opening into the bite of said rolls and means operating through the opposite opening for pushing the rod or billet into said rolls, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a furnace forheating rods or billets having a pair of openings in its side walls placed opposite each other and at the delivery end of the furnace, of a pair of rotating rolls placed opposite one of said openings, means operating through the opposite opening for pushing the rod or billet into the bite of said rolls, and means for guiding the advancing end of the rod or billet between the furnace and the rolls, substantially as described.
