Be it known that I, LOUIS GLCK, a citizen of Austria-Hungary, residing at 312 East Ninety-fourth street, New York,in the county of N ew York and State of New York, have invented an Improvement on Skirts,of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof. i

This invention relates to skirts,and particularly to the waistbands thereof; and the object of the invention is to provide improved means for fastening a skirt at the waistband and for closing the ordinary placket-opening and also adjusting the waistband; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, com bination, and arrangement of partsV hereinafter described and claimed. The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a back view of the upper portion ofa skirt provided with Inyvimprovement; Figs. 2 and 3, a back and plan view, respec. tively, of the upper back portion of a skirt, showing the method of operatingmy improved skirt-fastening devices; Fig. 4, a side elevation of a button which I employ, and Fig. 5 a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.

In the drawings forming part of this speciication the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of Ithe views,'and in said drawings I have shown at 5 the back portion of the top of a skirt 6, provided with a waistband 7, and in the practice of my invention I form in the back of the skirt, at the top thereof, two gores 8, in which are-secured triangular pieces 9, which close said gores. The gores 8 are a predetermined distance apart, and the central portion 10 at the back of the skirt between said gores isformed into plaits 11, which extend back to the dotted lines 12 and extend clear to the bottom ot' the skirt.

The ends of the waistband 7 at the back are provided with eyelets 13, any desired number of which may beemployed, and in practice I secure to the top of thecentral portion -11 a metal strip 14, (see Fig. 5,) provided with a textile covering 15, which may consist of the same material as the waistband 7 or of any serrano. 721,661. lother preferred material, and the said metal strip and the casing thereof are provided with two eyelets 16, each of which is provided with an extension 17, and the extensions 17 of the eyelets 16 project in the ydirection of the ends of the metal strip 14er in the direction ofthe gores 8. A cross-section of one of these eyelets 16 is shown in Fig. 5, and in connection therewith I employ a button 18, which is shown in'position in Figs. 2 and-3 and detached in Fig. 4. This button consists of a head 19, which is beveled on one side and provided on the other side with a shank composed of ltwo separate parts 2O and 21, the

part 20 of the shank being adjacent to the `head of the button and being much larger than the part 21 and the end thereof adjacent to the part 21 being enlarged and beveled, as shown at 22, and the end of the part 21 is Vprovided with a head 23.

The gores 8v are shown between the points marked in Fig. 3, and in practice in connecting the waistband at the backthe opposite sides thereof are folded inwardly and backwardly, as shown at 24 in Fig. 3, and one of the buttons 18 passes through both folds of said waistband, as is also shown in said figure, also through the metal strip 14 or the eyelets 16, secured therein.

The eyelets 13, through two of which the buttons are passed, are of such size as to permit the enlarged 'portion 2O of the shank of the button to pass therethrough, and the enlarged and beveled e'nd 22 of the enlarged portion 20 of the shank of lthe button is forced through said eyelets and will remain therein under ordinary circumstances, and when the heads 23 on the smaller portions 21 of the shanks of the buttons are passed through the eyelets 16 the said smaller portions of thev shanks of the buttons pass into the eXtensions 17 of the eyelets 16 and securely hold the ends of the waistband in the desired position.

In Fig. 2 I have shown one end yof the waistband folded, as hereinbefore described, and the other end free, and a portion of the cov ering of the metal plate 14 is also removed; but it will be understood that in order to completely close the waistband at the back both ends of the waistband must be folded, as shownin Fig. 3, and the buttons passed therethrough and through the spring-metal plate 14. Itlwill also be apparent that any suitable material may be substituted for the metal plate 14, the only object in this connection being to provide a stiff and yielding support.

When the ends of the waistband are connected at the back, as shown in Fig. 3, the folds in the skirt formed by folding the waistband, as shown at 24, overlap the plaits 1l, and the back of the skirt is thus made very full and is plaited or folded. from the waistband to the bottom of the skirt, it being understood that the said plaits or folds are loose at the bottomfso as to permit of the free movement of the skirt and the expansion thereof.

It will thus be seen that I accomplish the "object of my invention by means of devices simple in construction and operation and also comparatively inexpensive and which are perfectly adapted to produce the result for which they are intended.

, claim as new and desire to secure by Letters the back and at each side of the vertical center thereof, with a gore, said skirt being also provided at the top with a waistband, the ends of which terminate at the outer edges of said gore, the central portion of the skirt between said gores being plaited or folded, and provided at the top with a stiffeningplate having holes or eyelets, the ends of the waistband at the back being also provided with eyelets, and saidrends of the waistband being adapted to be folded so as to forin loop portions through which buttons are passed, said buttons being also adapted to he passed through the holes or eyelets in said stiffeningplate, substantially as shown and described.

2. A skirt the top of which is provided centrally of the back and in the line of the waistband with a stiening-plate, said skirt being also provided with a waistband, the ends of which adjacent to said stiffening-plate and at the opposite sides thereof, are provided with eyelets, said waistband and the part of the skirt connected therewith, being adapted to be folded over said stiffening-plate and outside thereof, and buttons which are adapted to be passed through the eyelets in the folds thus formed, and through the eyelets in the stiffening-plate, substantially as shown and described.

3. A skirt the top of which is provided centrally of the back and in the line of the waistband with a stiffening-plate, said skirt being also provided with a waistband, the ends of which adjacent to said stiffening-plate and at the opposite sides thereof, are provided with eyelets, said waistband and the part of the skirt connected therewith, being adapted to be folded over said stiffening-plate and outside thereof, and buttons which are adapted to be passed through the eyelets in the folds thus formed, and through the eyelets in the stiening-plate, said eyelets in the stiffeningplate being provided with ou twardly-directed extensions adapted to receive the shanks of said buttons, substantially as shown and described.L

4. A skirt the top of which is provided at the back and at each side of the center thereof, with a gore, and pieces placed therein, the

said skirt between said gores being folded to form plaits, and being also provided at the top with a stiffening-strip in line with the waistband, said skirt being also provided at the top with a waistband, the ends of which at the opposite sides are provided with eyelets, said stiffening-strip being also provided with eyelets, and the ends of the waistband being adapted to be folded over said stiifeningstrip, and buttons which are passed through the eyelets in the ends of the waistband thus folded, and through the eyelets in the stitleningstrip, substantially as shown and described.

5. A skirt the top of which is provided at the back and at each side of the vertical center thereof, with a gore, said skirt being also provided at the top with a waistband the ends of which terminate at the outer edges of said gores, and the central portion ot' the skirt between said gores being plaited or folded, and provided at the top with a stift'ening-plate, and devices for connecting the ends of the waistband at the back with said stieningplate, substantially as shown and described.

6. A skirt the top of which is provided at the back and at each side of the vertical center thereof, with a gore, said skirt beihg also provided at the top with a waistband, the ends of which terminate at the outer edge of said gores, the central portion of the skirt between said gores being plaited or folded, and means for connecting the ends of the waistband with the central top portion of the skirt between said gores, substantially as shown and described.
