(Application #led Apr. 25. 1901.)
mr Q eb UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS ALARME, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAIR-DRESSERS BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 686,186, dated November 5, 1901. Application tiled April 25, 1901. Serial No. 57,408. (No model.)
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS ALARME, a citizen of the United States, residing at NewYork, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Hair-Dressers Blocks, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to hair dressers blocks; and it has for its object to provide an improved device of this class which shall be superior in point of durability, cleanliness in operation, and general efficiency.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved hair-dressers block showing its use. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical sectional View taken upon the line :r fr, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional view taken upon the line y y, Fig. l.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates my improved hair-dressers block, which consists of a slightly-compressible dome-shaped body 2, formed in its upper portion to simulate the shape of a human head, whereby a wig 3 may be pressed and otherwise dressed into proper form upon the same in the customary manner. The body 2 is provided with a rigid base-plate t, from which a tubular socketpiece 5 projects upwardly within the body 2. The socket-piece 5 fits rotatably upon the su pporting-standard 6.
In carrying out my invention I provide a tilling 7 for the body 2, which illing consists of flnely-divided cork or similar material which is formed into a compact mass of the properproportions and is maintained in the proper form by a covering 8, which is connected at its lower edges, as at 8, with the edges of the baseplate4 and extends in continuous formation around the sides and over the top of the body.
In the preferred form of construction the covering 8 consists of two separate parts-an outer part 9 and an inner part l0, respectively. 'lhe outer part 9 consists of textile material, in which is incorporated a suitable quantity of fireproofing material, such as Fireproofine or other similar preparation. The inner part l() of the covering consists of text-ile material, in which is incorporated a suitable quantity of waterproofing material,
such as oil orrubber. The outer and inner parts preferably extend around and over the filling 7 in close facial contact and jointly perform theirireproofing and Waterproofing functions at all points of the body, eectively protecting the filling 7 against the injurious effects ot' heat and moisture attending the dressing operation.
The operation and advantages of my improved hair-dressers block will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. In dressing wigs and similar articles upon the block the same are subjected to a moistening process and are also pressed, and it results that a considerable quantity of the moisture and heat pass into the block, and in the forms of block now customarily employed cause damage to the block itself and also cause disguration and discoloration of the wig orhair device being dressed. These deleterious elfects arise from the character and form of the material customarily employed in devices of this class. For the filling sawdust is ordinarily employed and for the covering a thin permeable fabric, such aslinen or cotton cloth, having no iire or water proof qualities. As the moisteningprocess continues the moisture passes through the covering and forms, with the sawdust, a discoloring mixture, which oozes through the covering and stains the hair. The covering after extended use becomes rotted and weakened and eventually gives way under the pressing operation. Furthermore, if the pressin g-iron becomes overheated the covering becomes scorched, and its final destruction is thus hastened. By means of my improved construction all of these vital defects are overcome and the block may be used continuously under adverse conditions without material ill eect. The employment of cork as the filling 7 prevents discoloration of the covering, and the work which` is dressed upon the same in the event that any moisture in an extreme dampening operation should pass through the covering. Under all normal operative conditions the covering 8 will operate effectively in its heat and moisture proof functions. The employment of cork, as described, also results in a block of relatively light weight, and consequently easy of manipulation. Y
IOC)
I do not desire to be understood as limitP ing myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modilieations may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly falls Within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. An improved hairdressers block, oomprising a filling provided with a ireproof covering which maintains the filling in operative form.
2. An improved hair-dressers block, comprising a filling provided with a waterproof and lireproof covering.
3. An improved hair-dressers block, comprising a rigid base-plate, a filling of finelydivided oork or similar material, and a double covering which ineloses the lling at the top and sides and is secured to the base-plate.
4. An improved hair-dressers block, oomprising a rigid base-plate provided with an upwardly-projecting socket-piece, a filling of finely-divided cork or similar material which is massed above said baseplate and surrounds said soeket-piece, and a double covering which inoloses the filling at the top and sides and is secured to the base-plate, said double Covering consisting of an outer fireproof member and an inner Waterproof member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name in the presence of the subscribing Witnesses.
A LOUIS ALARME.
