PLATFORM FOR PAINTERS.

Be it known that we, CHARLES S. SPRAGUE and FREDERICK O. SPRAGUE, citizens of the United States, residing in Northstar township, in the county of Gratiot and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Platform to be Used in Connection with and Attached to Painters Ladders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to painters appliances; and it has for its object to provide a platform which may be attached to different rungs of a ladder to hold it at difierent eleva tions and which when in place will act as a support for the painter.

' A further object of the invention is to provide a construction which may be easily and quickly applied and removed, which will stand securely in place, and which may be adjusted to various angles to the ladder.

Other objects and advantages of the construction will be understood from the following description.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in both views, Figure 1 is a bottom perspective view of the device in position upon a ladder. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the device in position upon the ladder.

Referring. now to the drawings, there is shown a ladder comprising the

5 and 6, having the usual connecting-rungs 7, and it is to the rungs that the device is directly connected.

The platform consists of a stage 8, which may be of wood and formed of one or more pieces, and transversely of the under side of which are secured the

metal straps

9 and 10, which are near to the ends of the stage, and each of which straps is provided at one end with a hook 11 for engagement over a rung of a ladder, the stage being on the outer side of the ladder when the ladder is in position inclined against a building. The stage is thus pivotally and removably connected to the ladder, the hooks permitting of swinging movement and of ready application and removal, and to hold the stage at different angles to the ladder, so that it may support the weight of a man, a stop is provided for engagement with the rungs of the ladder below the stage. This stop consists of a piece of strap metal or a bar 15, the upper end of which is bifurcated to form the

16 and 17, the ends of which are turned outwardly to form the axiallyalined trunnions 18 and 19, which are engaged in bearings formed by bending the

9 and 10 downwardlyin arcuate form at points approximately midway of their ends. The lower end of the bar is adapted to rest against a rung, and by holding the trunnions 18 and 19 from turningin their bearings the platform or stage is prevented from dropping. To prevent this pivotal movement, the bar is provided with a line of perforations 20 for interchangeable engagement by the laterallyturnedend of a rod 21, having a T-head 22, the ends of which are engaged under the straps 23, secured to the under side of the stage and at the front edge thereof. When the hook end of this rod is engaged with a perforation of the bar, pivotal movement of the bar is prevented, and being thus held rigid it acts as a positive stop when engaged with a ladder-rung to prevent dropping of the stage.

By shifting the end of the rod todifferent perforations the stage is held at difierent angles to the ladder to correspond to difierent angles of inclination of the ladder to which it is attached.

This device may be set at any height and may be used to support a painter when he is working above the ground or may be used as a table to support the paint-bucket when he is working upon the ground.

In practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and any suitable materials and proportions may be used ithout departing from the spirit of the invention.
