SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 685,959, dated November 5, 1901.
Application iiled April 25, 1901. Serial No. 57,419. (No model.)
To all whom/'it lita/y concern:
Be it known that I, 'WILLIAM VARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sparrows Point, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stuffing-B0X Glands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in devices applicable to packing or stuffing boxes; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the same, all as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The .annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved gland for packing or stufting boxes. Fig. 2 isa vertical transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view showing the two sections of the gland separated from one another.
Referring by letterto the accompanying drawings, A designates the gland, which is composed of two sections B and C, that are detachably connected to one another and are providedwith semicircular flanges D D and lugs E E at the rear portion, where the gland joins the face of the stuffing-box F, said lugs being perforated to admit screws' a a, which enter female-screw-threaded taps in the face of the box, whereby the gland is firmly but removably secured to said box. This gland is provided with the cent-ral longitudinal opening b for passage of the piston-rod G, in which said rod has its play. The lower section or half of the gland, as at C, is provided on its edges, on opposite sides of the central passage l), with grooves or channels c c, which extend from the front of the gland to the rear thereof, the interior sides or walls d d of which are inclined or beveled, providing a groove on either side of the central passage to receive the accompanying drawings, that I construct a gland in two parts or sections which are joined together by a dovetailed portion, and when the two halves are joined together they are firmly locked to one another by thescrew g, thus preventing any longitudinal movement of either section, and when it is desired to separate the sections from one another the Operator simply withdraws the screw g and the top screw a, thereby releasing the upper halt or section B from the face ot' the stuifing-box, when said halt can be detached by sliding the same outward until the dovetailed tongues are released from the chambers in the opposite section, thus permitting the lower section C to remain, it desired, secured to the face ot the stufiing-box, and in removing the gland or both sections from the face of the stuiiing-box both the Lipper and lower screws a a are withdrawn, as well as the screw g, when the sections can be detached from the piston-rod by sliding said sections longitudinally in opposite direction from one another. It will be further observed that my device can be readily attached to mechanism of any description having a stuffing-box, and it will be readily seen that in removing and replacing the stuffing or packing in the box one or both sections can be removed and replaced without interfering with the piston-rod or any portion of the machinery,
'and it is durable, ornamental, and at the same time cheap to manufacture, as well as being easily attached and detached.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In adeviceof the character described, the whereby the latter are held firmly in place, glandoomprising Ialle two sections, dovetailed i as shown and described.
