SPRING-BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,898, dated November 5, 1901.

To a. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. ADE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the cityoflVilliamsport, Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Beds,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto improvements in spring-beds, and more particularly to improvements in the spring-bed for which Letters Patent of the United States were issued to me on August 14:, 1900, No. 655,893; and the object of my invention is to furnish an improved form of removable head or foot piece, as will be described fully hereinafter.
In the drawings which form part of this specification, Figure 1 isa perspective view of two of the bed-springs, of part of the removable head or foot piece, and of the means, carried by the springs, for carrying the head or foot piece; and Fig. 2, a perspective View of one of the tangs, with its locking projections withwhich the head or foot piece is furnished.
T) represents the bed-springs, and e the removable head or foot piece. (1 d are metallic sockets carried by springs b, which carry the head or foot piece. The sockets d are double and of a cruciform shape and are adapted to be carried by the corner springs of the mattress, while the sockets d are single and are adapted to be carried by the springs along the edge of the mattress and between the corner springs, their'arrangement being similar to that shown in my patent above referred to.
In the present construction the removable head or foot piece is constructed of wire,which is 'bent upward at the outer end to formlips a and at the inner end to form tangs c, which are V-shaped and furnished on the sides with projections f. The tangs c are adapted to enter the sockets d d and to be locked therein by the projections f engaging the openings 9 in the single socket d or the right-angled socket-openings in the socket cl, which hold the head or foot piece firmly while in use, but which permit its easy removal from the sockets when desired.
The head or foot piece c, with its lips a and tangs c, is preferably formed from a single piece of heavy wire bent and formed into the shape shown. It yields to the weight of the body in substantially the same manner as other parts of the mattress. The sockets d d are furnished with tailpieces h, which are adapted to be bent around the tops of the springs 19, and their forward ends are held by of said sockets.
