In the form thereof herein shown and described and which may be its preferred form,- ,ifdesired, a track 2 is secured to the oar`y body 3 above the door, and O11 tllis track is located hangermechanism, comprising in the present instance a plurality of hangers 4, which may in practice be provided with rolls 5 engaging said track, the hangers being usually so constructed as to prevent play thereof on the track. Thesehangers,which are shown located relatively remote to each other, are connected with the door by suitable means designated herein as rock-shaft lnechanism 6, for which purpose the door is provided with a pair of plates 7, having ears 8. This rock-shaft mechanism in the form shown comprises a rock-shaft 6, having a pair of arms G and 12, the arm 6" heilig bolted or pivotally secured to one of the door-plates 7, while the arm 12 is connected with a'crank 6', having a horizontal journal 9, projecting into one of the hangers 4, it being secured therein in solne suitable manner, the lower end of said crank being pivotally secured to the other door-plate 7. ln practice this rock-shaft mechanism might be formed as an integral structure; but in the present instance the arm 12 of the rock-shaft is bolted to the crank 6 in such manner that such parts may be operated at the same time, and for all practicable purposes the crank 6' and arm 12 might be considered to constitute one arm of the rock-shaft. For actuating this rock-shaft mechanism to throw the door outwardly and upwardly a lsuitable actuator is provided, shown herein as a lrock-shaft 13, projecting toward the top and bottom of the door and shown located adjacent to one side thereof with its axis located substantially parallel with the plane of vthe door, suitable keepers 14 being located `on the door for the lower end of this rockshaft. This rock-shaft actuator is connected with the rock-shaft mechanism by suitable connecting means, Which in the present instance comprises a bell-crank 15, pivotally secured to one of the hangers 4, one arm 15 thereof being shown connected with the crank 6 and arm 12 of the rock-shaft mechanism by means of a link 16, through which a bolt connecting the two parts together projects, while Athe other arm 15 of this bellcrank is connected with the rock-shaft 13 by a link 17 and a crank 1S, the link being secured to the bell-crank and to one part of such crank and the crank being shown IOO mounted in a suitable bearing 19, carried by one of the hangers-for instance, that hanger which carries the bell-crank--the lower end of said crank 18 being pivotally secured to the rock-shaft 13. By means of this pivotal connection the bottom of the door may be swung outward after it is released from the brackets 25, so that such door may be freed from any freight which may have fallen against it. v As the door is shiftable upwardly and outwardly such upward movementtends to carry the freight away from the car-door and to shift it suflciently to enable the door to be swung outward at its bottom and permit such freight to be moved away from the door without the necessity of cutting through such door, as has been frequently necessary.
For shifting the rock-shaft 13 suitable means is provided, shown herein as a bar 20, by means of which the shaft is rocked. This bar is shown provided with an eye 21 at its end for the reception of projections-one, as 22, secured to the door, and the other, as 23, to the car-body-whereby when the arm is in engagement with either one of the projections the rock-shaft will be held against movement. In the present instance it will be noted that the projection 23 is located nearer the doorway than is the projection 22. The length of the bar 20 is such that in order to have the projection 23 coperate therewith it is necessary that the door be moved laterally on its track a certain distance, whereupon on swinging the bar 20 into position to engage the projection 23 the door will be maintained in this partially open position and so permit the ventilation of the car. Of course it will be understood that the projection 23 may be located at any desired distance from the doorway, according to the length of the bar 20, or a numberof such projections may be provided to permit the door to be opened various distances, if desired.
The door is provided with a handle24, by means of which the bottom may be pulled out after such door is shifted upwardly and outwardly, and suitable devices 25 are provided at the corners of the doorway to guide the same in its movement.
In use on the operation of the rock-shaft actuator 13 the crank 18 will beoperated to shift the bell-crank 15, thereby to operate the rockshaft mechanism 6, connecting the hangers 4 with the door, and so throw the door upwardly and outwardlyinto position whereby it can be shifted laterally away from the doorway, to either side of which it may be moved. A suitable stop 30 is, however, provided in the present instance for the door to st-rike against when shifted on its track into position to close the doorway.
In the organization shown and described in my contemporaneously-pending application hereinbefore referred to the mechanism is somewhat different, and in order to shift the doorupwardly and outwardly duplicate crank mechanisms connecting the door with the body of the car and duplicate bell-cranks and connectors are shown. In the present instance, however, this duplication of parts is by a simple organization of mechanism rendered unnecessary, the organization being such that the door is connected with the carbody by practically one mechanism and designated herein as rock-shaft mechanism, which is connected with the rock-shaft l0- cated at one side of the door by a single bellcrank, whereby the mechanism is very much simplified. This bell-crank is shown so located on the hanger that its direction of movement is parallel to the plane of the door, and by locating it on the hanger adjacent to and at the outer side of the track it is in position vto assist in forcing the lower part of thc hanger inward and the upper part thereof outward against the track when the actuator is shifted, since part of the weight of the door is carried bythe bell-crank when said actuator is shifted, the organization being such that the door is eccentrically supported on the track at this time, so that the friction of the hanger on the track will be Stich that the door will be kept from moving to freely when the car is bumped. Further-- more, it will be seen that practically all of the mechanism is located free of the door, it being carried in the present instance above the door, so that the door is free of the weight thereof, which thus renders the door more easily shifted.
In conclusion I desire to state that this improvement may bc used in al1 kinds of freight and box cars-such as ref rigerator-cars,&c. and can also be used in connection with structures other than freight-cars, if desired, so that the term car-body as used herein and in the claims is not to be construed as a limitation to structures of that class.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, withacar-body having a doorway and a door, of a pair of hangers shiftably supported on said body and connected to said door near the opposite edges thereof; a single actuating means for throwing the door into position to be moved away from the doorway; and means for transmitting motion from said single actuating means to the door and including a single bell-crank having its direction of movement substantially parallel to the plane of the door.

The combination, with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of a track secured to said body; hanger mechanism mounted on said track; means connecting said hanger mechanism with the door; an actuator; a device located on said hanger-mechanism at the outer side thereof and adjacent to and working in a plane substantially parallel to the track and connected with said actuator and connecting means, the organization being such that when the door-actuator is shifted the hanger mechanism will be tilted, whereby the door will be eccentrically supported on such track so that the friction of the hanger mechanism on the track will be such that the door will be kept from moving too freely.
5. The combination with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of a track secured to said body; hanger mechanism mounted on said track; means connecting said hanger mechanism with the door; an actuator; and adevice pivoted to said hanger mechanism adjacent to and at the outer side of the track and connected with said actuator and connecting means' and having its direction of movement substantially parallel to the plane of the door.
6. The combination, with a car-body having 'a doorway and a door, of means for supporting the door on said body for movement in one direction; a rock-shaft projecting toward the top and bottom of the door and having its movement in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of said door; and connecting means between said rock-shaft and supporting means and comprising a pair of cranks, one a bell-crank.
7. The combination, withacar-body having a doorway and a door, of means for supporting the door on said body for movement in one direction; a rock-shaft projecting toward the top and bottom of the door and having its movement in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of said door; and connecting means between said rock-shaft and supporting means and comprising a pair of cranks, one a bell-crank, the former having its direction of movement corresponding with the direction of movement of said rock-shaft.
8. The combination,with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of means for supporting the door on said body for movement in one direction; a rockshaft projecting toward the top and bottom of the door and having its movement in a direction transversev to the direction of movement of said door; and connecting means between said rock-shaft and supporting means and including a crank having its direction of movement corresponding to the direction of movement of said rockshaft.
9. The combination,with a car-body havin g a doorway and a door, of means for supporting said door on said body; an actuator; and connecting means between said actuator and supporting means and comprising a pair of devices, one having its direction of movement substantially parallel to the plane of the door, and the other comprising a vertically-located member having its direction of movement transverse to the plane of the door.
10. The combination, with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of a track secured to said body; hanger mechanism shiftable on said track; means connecting said hanger mechanism with the door; a bell-crank secured to said hanger mechanism and having its direction of movement substantially parallel to the plane of the door; a verticallylocated crank also secured to said hanger mechanism and connected with said bellcrank; and an actuator connected with said vertically-located crank. l

The combination, with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of a track secured to'said body; a device shiftable on said track; means connecting said device with the door for supporting said door; a bell-crank secured to said device; a crank likewise secured thereto and connected with said bell-crank; and a-rock-shaft projecting toward the top and bottom of the door and connected with said crank.

The combination, with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of a track secured to said body; a pair of devices shiftable on said track; a pair of members one supported by each of said devices and each connected with the door, one of said members comprising a crank and the other a rock-shaft having an arm secured to an arm of said crank; a bell-crank mounted on one of said devices and connected with said members; a rockshaft actuator having its axis substantially parallel with the plane of the door; and a crank carried by one of said devices and connected with said bell-crank and actuator.

The combination, with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of means for supporting said door on said body for movement into position to be shifted away from the doorway and for shiftable movement away from such doorway; an actuator for shifting the door into position to be moved away from the doorway; means cooperating with said actuator to maintain the door in its closed position; and means also cooperating with said actuator to maintain the door partially open, when shifted laterally, `to permit the ventilation of the car.

16. The combination with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of a track supported on said body; hanger mechanism shiftable on said track; means connecting said hanger mechanism and door; and a rock-shaft actuator projecting toward the top and bottom of the door and connected with said connecting means by a pair of members both supported by said hanger mechanism.
17. The combination with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of horizontally-located rock-shaft mechanism for supporting said door on said body for outward and upward movement, and a rock-shaft actuator projecting toward the top and bottom of the door and eective to shift the door into position to be moved away from the doorway.
18. The combination with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of a track secured to said body; a pair of hangers shiftably mounted on said track; horizontally-located rock-shaft mechanism connecting said door with said hangers whereby the door is shiftable upward and outward; a rock-'shaft actuator projecting toward the top and bottom of the door; and connecting means intermediate said actuator and rock-shaft mechanism.
19. The combination with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of a track secured to said body; hanger mechanism mounted on said track; horizontally-located rockshaft mechanism connecting said hanger mechanism with the door whereby the door is shiftable upward and outward; an actuator; and connecting means intermediate said actuator and rock-shaft mechanism and comprising a device supported by said hanger mechanism and having its direction of movement substantially parallel to the plane of the door.
20. The combination with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of a track secured to said body; a pair of hangers mounted on said track; rock-shaft mechanism connecting said hangers with the door; a rock-shaft actuator projecting toward the top and bottom of the door; and means having pivotal connection with said actuator for connecting it with said rock-shaft mechanism, whereby the door may be swung outwardly and upwardly at the bottom thereof.

The combination, with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of means for supporting said door for movement into position to be shifted away from the doorway and for shiftable movement away from the doorway; an actuator for shifting the door into position to be moved away from the doorway; means for shifting said actuator; and means located on the body of the vcar and cooperating with said actuator-shifting means to maintain the door partially open when shifted laterally to permit the ventilation of the car.

The combination, with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of means for supporting said door on said body for movement into position to be shifted away from the doorway and for shiftable movement away from such doorway; a rock-shaft actuator projecting toward the top and bottom of the door for moving the door into position to be moved away from the doorway; and means connected with said actuator to maintain the door partially open when shifted laterally to permit the ventilation of the car.
27. The combination with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of rock-shaft mechanism for supporting said door on said body; an actuator for shiftin g the door into position to be moved away from the doorway; and means for locking the door partially open to permit the ventilation of the car.

The combination with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of rock-shaft mechanism supporting said door on said body; a rock-shaft actuator connected with said rockshaft mechanism; means for shifting said rock-shaft actuator; and means located on the body of the car and cooperating with said actuator-shifting means, thereby to maintain the door partially open to permit the ventilation of the car.
30. 'The combination with a car-body having a doorway and a door, of means for supporting said door on said body for shiftable movement; an actuator for shiftin g the door; means vhaving pivotal connection with said actuator for connecting it with said supporting means, whereby the door may be swung outwardly from its bottom; and means coperating with said actuator to maintain the door partially open to permit the ventilation of the car.
