UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
" HARRY w. BELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LINTEL-BLOCIK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,318, dated October 29, 1901. Application filed April 18, 1901. Serial ll'o- 56.381. (No model.)
T0 on whom, it. may concern: I
Be it known that I, HARRY W. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough otManhattau, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Lintel-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to building construction, particularly floors and ceilings, and especially to lintel-blocks, and has for its object to provide a fireproof floor which shall at the same time be proof. against the entrance of rats, mice, or vermin of any kind and unusually firm, strong, and durable, though light and inexpensive on account of the economical employment and distribution of the material thereof.
A-further object is to provide a flooring for buildings which may. be simply and rapidly constructed and also shall combine the foregoing advantages. I
A further object is to provide an improved lintel block comprising an interdependent core and reinforcing means enveloped in a plastic material.
This invention comprises in a general way a plurality of parts comprehending a core, a hanger resting on said core, rein forcing means suspended by said hanger, and stifiening means supported on said reinforcing means, the whole enveloped in and surrounded by a plastic material; but one or more of the component parts may be omitted without affecting the invention. Oneform,'and, if desired, it may be the preferred form, of the invention is illustrated in the drawings accompany ing and forming part of this specification,- in
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improve lintel-block, the reinforcing means shown in dotted lines and the I-beams shown in section; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the improved lintel-block with a floor-blockin position,- said floor-block being partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the reinforcing means of said improved As shown in the drawings, the improved lintel-block A comprises a core 3, formed of .a sheet of metal set on edge and extending longitudinally through the center of the lintel-block" A, said core having its upper and lower edges turned back on itself, if desired, and provided at intervals, if desired, with anchors b, comprising pieces of metal passing through such sheet and extending horizontally out from each side. Resting on the up per edge of said core 3 at intervals and extending downward on each side of said core 3 are metallic V-shaped hangers 0, having their lower ends curved outward and upward, forming hooks 0. These hangers C may, if desired, be formed ofa continuous sheet of metal. Extending lengthwise said lintelblock A and supported in the hooks c is a metallic member D, comprising one or more rods. Extending crosswise of said block A and resting on the members D are metal strips E. Instead ofthe strips E-asheet of metal may be used, proper recesses being cut out to receive the hangers G. Enveloping and surrounding the parts organized as described is a plastic material F, molded into shape and having inclined sides, which may be provided, if desired, with shoulders a, which extend over the hooks c.
dent that the smallest possible sections of metallic materials may be used for the core,
hangers, rods, and strips, since the material which surrounds the metallic structure stiffens these members and enables very small sections to withstand relatively great stresses and overcome any tendency to buckle. The
construction also has the advantage of protecting the metal parts from oxidation and destruction by heat. The metal gives the lintel-block great strength in resisting shearing and tensional stresses, and the peculiar construction by which the turned-up lower ends of hangers C extend out under the shoulders a reinforces such shouldersctand prevents the plastic material F from being'crushed or dis too ture described herein; but the same may be varied in its details and combination of parts without departing from the principle and spirit of the invention.
Having described the invention, I claim 1. An improved lintel-block having a metallic core with one or more of its edges turned upon itself and one or more anchors extending through such core and projecting from the side.
2. An improved lintel-block having a sheetmetal core and a reinforcing member com prising a hanger resting on the upper edge of said core and extending downward therefrom and formed of a plurality of parts.
3. An improved lintel-block having a sheetmetal core and a reinforcing member comprising a hanger resting on the upper edge of said core and extending downward therefrom.
4. An improved lintel-block having a sheetmetal core and a plurality of reinforcing members comprising rods extending lengthwise said block, one on each side of said core and connected therewith.
5. An improved lintel-block having a sheetmetal core and a reinforcing member comprising a strip extending crosswise said block below said core.
6. An improved lintel-olock having a core and a plurality of reinforcing members comprising an anchor extending through said core and a hanger resting on the upper edge of said core and extending downward on each side thereof.
7. An improved lintel-block having a core and a plurality of reinforcing members comprising a hanger resting on the upper edge of said core and extending downward on each side thereof and having its lower ends turned up; and rods supported in said upturned ends.
8. An'improved lintel-block having a core and a plurality of reinforcing members comprising a hanger resting on the upper edge of said core and extending downward on each side thereof; rods supported by the lower parts of said hanger; and a crosswise member supported by said rods below said core.
9. An improved lintel-block having a core and a plurality of reinforcing members, such members comprising anchors extending through said core and projecting from each side thereof; a hanger resting upon the upper edge of said core and extending diagonally downward from each side thereof, said hanger having its lower ends turned up; rods supported in said upturned ends; and strips extending crosswise said block and resting on said rods.
