The members t and 8 are, then bored to provide holes for receiving bolts and the supports are fixed in place by any convenient means. The platform 3, of which the trans verse ribs are preferably adapted to fit and form a close engagement with the stirrup elements, is then placed so that its margin rests upon the horizontal bearing surface 11 intermediate the ribs 17, while the ribs 17 closely fit into and engage the stirrups 13. Due to the close engagement thus effected, it will not be necessary to attach the platform to the support, although in permanent constructions, bolts or screws 19 may be passed through the platform and the horizontal member 8. The bolts may be covered by cement or other material or not, as desired.
The modified form of the support shown in Fig. 3 is providedwith stirrups l3 adapted; to receive ribs 17 of the platform where the sides of the ribs have been pressed to gether into contact with each other and hence form a narrow, somewhat V-shaped cross section.
Still further modifications are shown in Figs. a and 5, inthe first of which the stirrupforms an almost completely closed circle in cross section, and in the; latter of which the stirrup projects upwardly, to engage an upwardly disposed rib in the platform.
As thus assembled the platform may be permanent or readily removable but in either event it is securely supported and retained in position. In addition to the utilitarian feature of security thus-accomplished, theconstruction is characterized by occupy ing but little space both upon the adjacent wall and in the space directly beneath the platform. This effects a substantial economy of space and also avoids ugly projections which from an architectural standpoint present serious difliculties to be overcome. Moreover, the strains impressed upon the platforms are resisted by the ribs and transmitted therethrough to the stirrup members of the support, which on account of their-close fitting engagement with the ribs and their own reinforced arrangement are capable of receiving and in turn transmitting themto the vertical or wall member, both downwardly and laterally against the wall.
It will be readily apparent that other applications and adaptations of the invention may be made, but such applications and modifications are to be understood as comprehended by and included within the terms of the present specification and claims.
I claim:
1. A structural support, comprising a continuous member having a stirrup element therein and another member in a plane at an angle to the first member and joined thereto along a common edge.
2. A structural support, comprising a coninuous member,a portion thereof forming a stirrup element, and another member disposed in a plane forming a right angle with the first member and attached thereto along a common longitudinal edge.
A structural support, comprising a continuous member, a portion thereof intermediate the ends forming a stirrup element, and another member consisting of a plurality of flanges disposed in a plane at an angle to the first member and attached thereto along a common longitudinal edge.
4. A structural support, comprising a continuous member, a portion thereof intermediate the ends forming a stirrup element, and, another member consisting of a plurality of flanges disposed in a plane ata right; angle to the first member and attached thereto along a common longitudinal edge.
5. A structural support, comprising two substantially flat members, integrally joined, along a common line of contact and at right. angle to each other, one of said members comprisinga plurality of flange elements,
spaced apart with respect to said line of contact, and the other of said members having s'tirrups therein intermediate said flange ele ments.
6. A structural support, comprising two substantially'fiat members, integrally. joined along a common line of contact. and at right angles to each other, one of said members comprisin a plurality of flange elements,
