HARRIE E. BAKER AND OSGOOD D. BAKER, OF INIVOOD, IOWA.
CURTAIN-TRIMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,196, dated October 22, 1901.
Application filed March 9, 1901. Serial No. 50,529. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HAERIE E. BAKER and OSGOOD D. BAKER, citizens of the United States, residing at Inwood, in the county of Lyon and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Trimmers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to certain novel improvements in curtain-trimmers; and the object is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and eflicient device for this purpose.
To this end our invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several elements of the trimmer, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved curtain-trimmer. Fig. 2 is a transverse section, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the cutter-blade or knife.
The numeral 1 designates the base-board, on one end of which is fixed the stationary block 2, provided with the bearing-bracket 3, and alined with said bracket is a second bracket 5, fixed to the longitudinally adjustable block 4., which is secured to the inner ends of the parallel bars 6 6', the outer ends of which are connected by a handgrip 7, and 8 represents a fixed guide-block on which the said parallel bars slide and which are held in place by the spring-plate 9, fixed to the guide-block 8. The outside face of the bar 6 is beveled, as shown, to correspond to the meeting face of the contiguous fixed brace 10 on the base-board parallel with the guideblock 8.
12 designates the graduated scale fixed to the base-boardand along Whichthecutterblade may be adjusted to conveniently ascentain the width to which the shade or curtain is to be cut or trimmed.
13 designates the cutter blade, which is adj ustably secured to the cross-head 14. of the slide 15, adj ustably secured to the base-board by the fixed guide-block 16 and clamping screw 17 and which may be conveniently manipulated by the hand-grip 18, fixed to its outer end.
19 and 20 designate the parallel braces fixed to the base-board and which serve to support the slide when the device is in operation.
The operation of trimming a shade or ourtain is performed as follows: The trimmer is secured to a work-bench, table, or other suit= able support and the knife or cutter-blade.
is adjusted to correspond to the size or width to which the curtain is to be reduced, and
the curtain having first been rolled up true on its roller the latter is inserted in the brack ets 3 and 5. The stick or free end of the curtain is now grasped by the hem and the knife or cutter-blade pressed through the curtain next to the hem, and the operator now walks backward, drawing the curtain with him, until it is cut up close to the roller. The curtain is now rolled up and the hem portion out, and the roller and stick are now sawed off to correspond.
In the accompanying drawings we have shown our invention in the best form now known to us; but many changes may be made within the skill of agood mechanic without departing from the spirit of our invention as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A curtain-trimmer, comprising the base board, the stationary bearingbracket 2 3, the longitudinally-adj ustable bracket 5, the fixed brace 10, the slide 15, the cross-head 14, and the cutter-blade" 13," adj ustably secured to said cross-head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witn esses..
HARRIE E. BAKER.
, OSGOOD DLBAKER.
