COLUMBUS JOHNSTON, OF CLARKSVILLE, MISSOURI.
Letters Patent No. 68,512, elated September 3, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHARGER POR SHOT-POUGHES.
@in Stigrbule tefetnb tu in tljesc tcitrtr fintent mit uniting intt nt tlg simu.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, COLUMBUS JOHNSTON, of Clarksville, Pike county, Missouri, have inventedn new und useful Improvement. in Chargers for Shot-Pouches; and I do hereby' declare that the following is :1y full, clear. and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in thc nrt to unibe :ind use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to n cha-rger for shot-pouches, which charger is constructed with two tubes, one arranged to slide within the other, and with the outer one provided with an opening communicating with the p \uch, and an opening communicating with the discharge-spout or tube, and with thc inner so constructed and arranged that by pushing or forcing it in, the opening to the pouch is closed at the saine time the opening to the discharge-tube is being opened. The shot contained within the inner tube between the openings of thc outer and discharge-tubes can pass to the discharge-tube, and thence out of it to and into the barrel of the gun, if propertyv prcscnted'thereto. 'lhc inner tube of the charger is constructed in such a manner as to enable a greater or lesser number or aniount of shot to be discharged from the pouch, as may be desired. In-thc accompanying plate of drawings my improvements in chargers for shot-pouches are illustrated#- v Figure 1 being a central section through the same in the direction of its length, and
Figure 2 a transverse section in the plane ofthe line x zr, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B, in the drawings, representtwo concentric tubes, the one, A, within the other, I3, wherein it is arranged to slide or play in and out. C, a spiral spring in the outer tube BLbetwcenits end or head-plate D and thc inner end E to the inner tube, this spring acting to throw out the inner tube anwso hold it. 'lo one side of the'outcr tube l the pouch is secured in any suitable manner, and between the two communication is had by an opening, F, in the corresponding side of the tube. G, an opening in inner tube` corresponding to the opening of` the outer tube. Below the` opening F in theouter tube, and upon the opposite side ot' the same thereto, is an opening, IAI, communicating with the side discharge-tube or spout I. The opening or part H is closed when the inner tube is out to its greatest distance, a pin or projection, J, ot' such tube limiting :1nd stopping its outward movement by contact with the upper end of the part II,
With a charger constructed as above described theishot pass from the pouch through the opening Ii oi' the outer tube into the saine, filling its space or chamber L, when, pressing in the inner tube A, the shot are carried down by its head or partition-plateN to the lower opening H ot'- the tube, which is being opened by such nievement, through which opening they pass out into the discharge-tube I, the pouch-openingli' closing as the spoutopcning opens.
To regulatcthc capacity of the charger for receiving and delivering a greater or lesser amount of shot, the inner tube is provided with a plunger or partition-plate, N, that through its stem O is connected with a cap, P, to the tube. yIfhis cup has Va spiral slot, Q, by which it turns or moves upon a stud or'pin, Il, of the tube A. This slot is notched at four points, S, which are respectively marked according to the capacity of the charger when the pin R is in this or that notch, as, for instance, quarter ounce, halt` ounce, three-quarter ounce, etc.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Thecombination of the inner and outer tubes A and I3, having side ports and side discharge-tube I, when all arranged together substantially as and for thepurposc described.
2. I also claim the adjustable plunger or piston-head Nite the inner tube A, substantially :is described, for the purpose specified. I
COLUMBUS JOHNSTON.
