Beit known that I, JOHN R. LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield township, in the county -of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vises, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to improvements in vises for bench-workmen, and has especial relation to improvements upon the machine for which I wasW granted Letters Patent of the United States 667,151 and 667,152, dated Jan-y uary 29, 1901.

It has been found in the use of this form of vise, in which the clamping of the jaws upon an object also locks the rotation of the vise upon its pivot, that where long objects-such as rods, pipe, &c.are clamped in the vise the frictional contact of the dog upon the pivot is insuficient of itself to prevent the rotation of the vise thereon by reason of the unusually long leverage thus obtained; and therefore the object of my invention is to provide an auxiliary or supplemental device which may be used when desired by the workmen for unusually long work and may be omitted altogether when the regular work is I being done.

To the aforesaid object my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction, combination, and arrangement of the various parts hereinafter described and then specically claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference-numerals indicate like parts in the diiferent views,l Figurel is a side elevation cf a vise upon which my improvement is placed; Fig. 2, a section at the line a: m of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal vertical section of the same in which the chain and pin are omitted.

In the drawings, lis a base-plate of generally a quarter-foil shape secured to the ta' ble 2, of any preferred style, and having the nearer leaf 3 turned downward ata right angle to lit over the front of the table 2. This base-plate 1 is secured to the table by lagsorews 4, all but one of which have ordinary heads, and this one, 5, has an integral ring,

whose use will be described later. Rising from the center of the plate 1 is a cylindrical post 6, upon which is pivoted the stationary jaw 7 of the`vise. -At a right angle to the 55 axis of the opening in the jaw 7, which receives the post 6, is a similar-sized opening, so that the jaw 7 and connected parts may be lifted from the post 6 and turned on either side and slipped over the post 6, and the vise 6oy will revolve on the post the same way as it does when in an upright position. the jaw 7 extends the movable jaw 8, which is drawn against jaw 7 by a screw rotated by a handle-bar 9. jaw 7 is a rocking dog 10 on a pivot 11, which is in substantially the shape of a bell-crank,with

its horizontal arm inside of the bar of the jaw 8 and its depending arm against the post 6, so

that the slight motion due to clamping an ob- 7o ject between the jaws 7 and 8 will tend to raise the horizontal arm of the dog 10 and in turnv cause the depending arm to bind against the pivot snugly and lock it against revolution.

Thus far the description is applicable to the type of vises for which I was granted patents as described; but I find, as before stated, that the pressure exerted by the dog 10 against the pivot is insufficient in a few cases, as with unusually long work, to resist rotation of the 8o insert a pin 12, which passes through the jaw 7 and into the desired openingin the post 6 and effectually locks it against rotation. I preferably make this pin 12 withan integral ring-head and attach it to the ring of the lagscrew 5 by a short section of chain 13, thus 9o preventing its getting lost.

It is obvious that if the vise is placed on the post 6 from either side the hole in the jaw 7 for the pin 12 will still register with the holes in the post, as the hole in the jaw 7 is central. 9,;

What I claim is 1. An improved vise, having a supporting cylindrical post, a fixed jaw having a vertical and a transverse, intersecting, horizontal opening adapted to fit said post with an openroc ing for the guide-bar of the movable jaw and for a rocking block; a rocking block pivot.

Through Pivoted below the jaw S in 65 ally mounted therein bearing a nut, and arranged to be forced against the post by compressing the jaws; a gnide-bar bearing a movable jaw arranged to slide :in the fixed jaw, a screw to compress said jaws, said post being provided with a number of holes and said fixed jaw being provided with a hole arranged to register with the holes in said post and a pin to enter the hole in said fixed jaw and any selected hole in said post to lock said vise against rotation, substantially as shown and described.

In a vise of the kind specified, the combination with a post having a number of holes to receive a locking-pin of a fixed jaw having an opening to iit said post with a hole for a locking-pin adapted to register as the vise is revolved on said post with a hole in said post, and a pin fitted to enter said holes to lock said vise against rotation, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a vise of the kind specified, the combination with a post having a number of holes to receive a locking-pin of a fixed jaw having vertical and horizontal, intersecting openings to fit said post, with holes radial to said openings for a locking-pin adapted to register as the vise is revolved on said post with a hole in said post, and a pin fitted to enter said holes to lock said vise against rotation, substantially as shown and described.
