Description

@nimh IBU ffice,
E. L. eAYfLoRD, or TERRYVILLE, eoNN'ECTIeUT.
l Letters Patent No. 68,496, dated September 3, 1867.
IMPROVEMN'L IN PIANO-LOCKS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, E. L. GAYLORD, of Terryville, in the county of Litchfield, and Stateof Connecticut. have invented a new and limproved Lock, and that the following description, taken-in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a fnll and exact speciication of the same, wherein I have setforth the nalnrc and principlesv of my said improvements, by which -my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent. Y
This invention relates to a new and improved lock, of that class which is designed for piano-fortes, sewingmachine.cases, and other articles which have hinged lids or covers.
The invention oonsistsjin the mechanism employed for operating the bolts, two being employed and' arranged to more or work in the are of one or more circles.. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is an internal view of my improved lock.
Figure 2, a section ofthe same taken in the-line a; rv, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts;
A represents the case ofthe lock, which may be constructed in the usual or in any proper manner. Within the lock-case there is tted a slide, B, so arranged as to be raised and lowered by a key7 C, of any proper construction. This slide may be fitted on any suitable guide or stump, a, to keep it in place, andit may lie-moved or operated by an arm, Z, projecting from an arbor, c, in which the key is fitted; said arm having a pin, d, at its outer end to passinto an oblong slot, c, in the slide,.as shown clearly in iig. 1. I do not, however, confine myself to this plan,v as other means may be employed. A spring, D, bears against one side ot the slide B to keep it in place when both in an elevated and depressed state.` E E are the bolts, the outerparts e'of which are of curved form, being portions of circles; the other parts f are straight and nearly at right angles with c, the inner ends off being pivoted within the case, as shown at g g. The parts f -of thebolts have pins 7i projecting from them, one from each, `and these pins are fitted in oblong slots z' in the slide-B, and hence it will be seen that by throwing up the slide B the curvcdparts e of the bolts will be shoved up out of the lock-case and through holes in the usual plate F, which is generally attached to the lid; said parts c moving in the paths of circles, of which the pivots 'g g are the centres, and when the slide B is drawn down the parts e will be drawn down Within the lock-case or out from the holes in the plate F. If necessary or desired both et' the bolts E may work on one and the same pivot g.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The two bolts E E, working on separate or on a common centre or pivot, y, in combination with a verticallymoving slide, B, connected with'the bolts, and all arranged substantially as shown and described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 16th day o' April, 1867.
' E. L. GAYLORD.
