Description

@uitrit tang @anni @fitta CHARLES F. MARTINE, OF BOSTON, MASSAGE USET'IS.
Letters Patent' No. 68,373,. daim? September 3, 1867.
IMPROVED SOFA-BEDS-TEAD.
'IO ALLWHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
i Beit known'that I, CHARLES F. MARTINE, et Boston, in the county of Si1i`f`oll:,'a.nd in the. State of Mnssachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Sofa-Beds; and do hereby declare that the `following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon. In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification- A represents the body of the'sofa, and
B the back; said back being hinged to the body in such a manner as to be capable of being let down to form ka sofa-bedstead.
E represents a mattress, which is placed upon the sofa, as secu in Figure 1, so as to form a bed, without depression at that point where it covers the hinges connecting the back to the body.
This mattress is so connected-at its centre, longitudinally, to the body and back of the sofa that when said back 'is raised from a horizontal to a Vertical position the centre of the mattress will bc depressed so that the sofa willhave the appearance and eti'ect of having independent and separate cushions foi both its seat and back. The arms of this sofa are made in two parts, C and D, the one hinged lto the other, the one movable and the other stationary. The section C is hinged to the back odge of the sectionl), and is provided at its forward edge with a notched opening,f, int'o which a spring-catcl'i, a, catches, to secure the two parts together. 'When the two sections are closed their front edge is ornamented, and the joint is broken in one place by a button or disk, z'. Through the centre oi' this disk a pin, c, passes, connecting at its inner end with the catch a, and is for the purpose of operating it so as to unlock the two sections when desirable. When the sections O are swungr laround in line with sections D, as seen in fig. 1, the two together forni a foot and headfboard for the hedstead. The stationary sectionsD are provided at their rear edges near their tops with the loops or sta-ples I I, and the back of the sofa is provided with two latches G G. These latches are pivotcd in the hack L, and have springs H II connected with them, which serve t'o make their notched ends catch ihto the staples or loops I I. The outervends of these latches project beyond the outersurface of the back L, and are connected together by means of the cord J'. By drawing the cord J from the sofa it operates upon both of the latches at the same time, causing them to disengage from the loops or staples I, so as to free the back, to enable it to be let down to form a hedstead. When the back is raised to avertical position the latches catch into the staples and retain the back securely in this position. A foot is hinged to the back in order to support it when said back is let down to form a bed. i
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim' as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I. The spring-catch a and pin e in the stationary section D, and the notched opening in the hinged section C of the arm for securing said sections together, as and for thc purpose specified.` v
2. The latches G G pivoted to the back Il, and used in combination with the staples or loops I I and cord J, for disengaging` both ends of the back simultaneously, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12th day of dune, 1867.
CHARLES F. MAR-TINE. [L 5.-]
