Be it known that I, FLst RY HUOT, of the city nnd State of New York,'hn.ve invented, made, and applied to n86 a certain new and useful Improvement in the Msnufaetureof Drying-Oils for Paints, (Lea; and I do hereby declare the following to he a correct and full description of my said invention, and of the features that distinguish the some from previous modes of manufacture.
Linseed oil has heretofore been boiled, end has also been subjected to agitation by jets of air forced into the same, to promote its drying qualities, and various substanc s. such .os litharge, hare been mixed with the same for this object. Rosin oil has a body which renders it adapted to use with paint, but it does not dry well.
My invention is especially adapted to the preparation of rosin oil, but it-msy be employed with linseed oil, or other oils having a sufioieut body to render them adapted to use with paints.
I take about one pound of nitric heid and two pounds of water; and mix the some with ahout six pounds of oil. I subject the some to a moderate degree of heat in a suitable cauldron or vessel, until the reaction between the ocid and oil ceases. I then allow the liquids to subside, the oil sud acid water separating, after character as to cause the oil to dry rapidly and hard whenexposed to the action of the air, as in pointing, printers ink in oil-cloths, and wherever drying-oil is eiuployed. What'I claim, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
. The manufacture of dryingwils having a body adapted to paint, &c., by the acid reaction, in the menner specified.
