POWDER CHARGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 683,106, datedffieptember 24,1901. Application filed $eptemher 27, 1900. Serial No. 31,328. (No specimens.)
.1 aZt whom it may concern.- I v p Be it known that I, PAUL DU BUIT, civil engineer, of the city of Paris, 13 Rue Auber, in
Y the Republic of France, have invented new my previous application for Letters Patent No. 2,509, of January 23, 1900, and were not therefore particularly described therein.-
The object of my invention is to provide a powder that shall be slow-burning,as that term is understood in this ,art, so as to produce an accelerating effect, and to accomplish this result I break the continuity of the mass of the powder by employing one 'or more sheets of powder of a suitable composition, each of which sheets carries a number of elongated projections, to be then rolled up to form the charge. The ideatas in my pending application above noted) is to present to the action of the detonator agradually-im creasing combustion-surface, and in addition in the present invention I rely not only on the taper of these elongations, but also upon the varying thickness of the sheet itself and on the difference in thickness and height of varying and. of respectively diiferent thickness.-
The teeth maybe of*any suitable shape, as-
the several sheets where a is employed.
According to the present invention the charge comprises substantially one or more sheets of powder which may be of a suitable thickness and of various shapes, according to,
plurality of sheets the results to be attained by the combustion of the charge. Each sheetis cut or otherwise shaped so as to resemble a comb with teeth of any suit-able'length and width, spaced as required, which teeth may terminate in points or in fringes of any suitable length, pointed or not. I
Figure 1 illustrates a plurality of sheets A and B of varying thickness partly rolled up. Figs. 2 to 6 show sheets A. to A respectively,
out in diiferent forms, but not rolled Figs.
7 and S are end views illustrating sheets of triangular, rectangular,polygonal, regular,or
irregular, and the sheetsmay be'rolled up, if
required. The teeth may be arranged close together, so that there is no space between them for the greater part of their length when the sheet is flat, but that spaces are formed between them when the sheet is rolled up. In some cases notches or grooves may be formed on one side of the sheet-that is to say, the notches or grooves do not extend completely through the 'sheetin which case the sheet should be rolled up with the notches or grooves on the outside. Furthermore, the teeth may be of equal orof very unequal and gradually-increasing width. The sheet of powder may be of uniforin or variable thickness and may gradually increase in height and in length, while the charge may be composed of several superposed sheets of powder of the same thickness or of diiferent thicknesses placed one upon another and rolled up together or separately. Finally, the charge hereinbefore described. may or may not occupy all the available height, according to circumstances, and it may advantageously have a height a little greater than the cartridge, so that in consequence ofthepressure of the projectile the comb-teeth are spread in such a manner as to be favorable to com-' bustion.
The several forms of elements hereinbefore described have a considerable influence on the combustion of the powder under pressure, and by selecting them judiciously the requirements of the ally complied with.
Having nowf ull y described and ascertained the nature. of my invention l declare that what I claim is- A charge of powder consisting-of a plurality of sheets of suitable composition and of varying thickness, the said sheets provided projectile may be ration-;
with tapering elongations and being rolled up to present all of said elongations in the same direction, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have-signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PAUL DU BUIT.
