PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. DIBLACKBURN, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
WAGON ATTACHMENT FOR SUPPORTING CHUTES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 682,969, dated September 1'7, 1901.
Application filed August 1,1901. Serial No. 70,529. (No modeL) To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, JOHN" T. D. BLACK- BURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon Attachments for Supporting Chutes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the unloading of coal or other material from wagons and in which the coal is conveyed from the wagon to the place of delivery or storage by a chute, has especial reference to means attached to the side of a wagon for supporting the inner end of the chute and to give the chute the proper elevation or pitch to'deliver the coal through a window or across a wide sidewalk into a vault by gravity, and consists in certain improvements in construction, which will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective showing the application of my invention to the side of a wagon and a chute supported thereon, and Fig. 2 a like View of the chute-support detached from a wagon.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates one side of a wagonbody of ordinary construction and such as are in common use for hauling coal and other material. When it is desired to deliver coal from such a wagon into a cellar or a vault, a chute is employed, such as B, (shown in Fig. 1,) and in order to support the inner end of the chute and provide the proper elevation or pitch for the chute to cause it to deliver the coal by gravity I provide a chutesupport having a body 0, which is preferably composed of vertical side bars a a and trans verse bars I) h, the former terminating in hooks c c, which engage the upper edge d of the side of a wagon, as shown in Fig. 1, and securely hold the chute-support in position.
The body or frame is preferably made of wrought bar-iron, and the sides and lower bar 12 are in one piece bent into the form shown, and the upper bar 5 is welded to the side bars in the usual manner. The body, however, may be made of gas-pipe, the several parts being joined together with elbows and Ts.
To the transverse bars 19 and b and in about the transverse center of the body 0 a tubu lar post 6 is secured and which is provided with a telescopic extension f, having laterally-extending arms g g, whose ends it h are turned upward to support the chute and secure it against lateral displacement. The extension f is vertically adjustable and may be turned in the post 8 to suit any elevation or inclination and any angle required of the chute to deliver or discharge coal into any suitable or preferred receptacle.
The hooks c c prevent the chute-support being jolted off the wagon while in motion over rough road-beds and form a ready and convenient means for attaching the device to a wagon-body, and after the extension f has been elevated to the proper height for delivery of coal the extension is secured by a screw i passing through the collar or reinforce It on the upper end of the post 6.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A device for supporting coal or other chutes provided with means for detachably securing it to the side of the body of a wagon, and having an extensible member provided with laterally-extending arms to engage a chute.
2. A device for supporting coal or other chutes provided with hooks for engaging the body of a wagon and securing the device thereto, and an extensible member having lateral and upturned arms to engage and support a chute.
In testimony whereof I affixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN T. D. BLACKBURN. Witnesses:
