UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILLIP ANDERSON, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ratent no. 689,978, area September '17, ieoi. Application filed March 30,1900. Strialllo.10,859. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILLIP ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stoves, and more particularly to that class in which the grate is made adjustable.
One object of this invention is to provide a stove-grate adapted to be raised or lowered by a handle and secured in the desired position by a locking bolt.
Another object of this invention is to provide a stove-grate adapted to be supported by a system of levers, which are so arranged as to make the adjustment of the grate entirely automatic.
With these objects in View and such others as may hereinafter appear my invention con- 'sists in the particular construction of the various parts and in the novel manner of combination or arrangement of said parts,- all of which will be described and specifically claimed. I In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical central longitudinal section through a stove embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail View of the grate.-
Referrihg' by letters to the drawirigs, A represents the stove or range to whlch my invention is applied.
A is the fire chamber.
The invention consists in a vertically-movable grate B, having a pivoted leaf 0 and supported pivotally by two arms D, extending from a rod 13'', which is pivotally connected to a lever E, f ulcrumed to a bracket F on the body of the stove at the point F and provided with a sliding counterbalance-weight G,which will automatically raise the grate or permit the latter to be lowered, according to the amount of coal on the grate. The rate is further made adjustable bya lift-rod ,which is pivoted to the outer end of the lever E at the point I and is adapted to lie flat against the face of the stove. This rod is provided with a handle J and a series of apertures K, adapted to register with an aperture L in the face of the stove and to be engaged by the set-bolt M, secured in the holder N and provided with a coil-spring O, which forces the bolt out when it is desired to have the adj ustment of the grate automatic.
It will thus be seen that I provide an auto matically-adjusted grate for stoves or fur naces, which is exceedingly cheap and simple in its construction and will efficiently-perform all of its intended functions.
Having thus described the various features of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- 1. A stove comprising a body, a pendent bracket secured to the bottom thereof, a lever fulcrumed to the bracket, a rod pivotally mounted in the lever, and having diverging supporting-arms,and a grate pivotally mount: ed on the supporting-arms.
2. A stove comprising a body, a pendent bracket secured to the bottom thereof, a lever fulcrumed to the bracket, 2'. counterbalance; weight on the lever, a rod pivotally mounted in the lever and having diverging supporting-arms, a grate pivotally mounted on the supporting-arms, and a leaf hinged to the grate and sliding on the back of the fire channel.
3. A stove comprising a body, a pendent bracket secured to the bottom thereof, a lever fulcrumed to the bracket, a counterbalance-v weight on the lever, a rod pivotally mounted in the lever, and having diverging support ing arms, a grate pivotally mounted on the supporting arms, a holder secured to the faceplate of the body, a lift-rod pivoted to the front end of the lever, working in the holder, and having a handle, and means for locking the lift-rod atdesired height.
4. A stove comprising a body having a perforated face-plate, a pendent bracket secured to the bottom of the body, a lever fulcrumed to the bracket, a counterbalance-weight on the lever, a rod pivotally mounted in the lever, and having diverging supporting-arms, a grate pivotally mounted on the supporting arms, a holder secured to the face-plate, of the body, a spring set-bolt working in the holder, and engaging the perforated faceplate, and a lift-rod having a series of bolt holes, pivoted to the front end of the lever, working in the holder, and having a handle.
In testimony whereof I hereto set my hand.
PHILLIP ANDERSON.
