To all whom it may concern:

I Be it known that we, GEORGE THORNTON, FRANKLIN D. FREEBORN, and WILLIAM HIL- LER, citizens of the United States, residing at Randolph, in the county of Oattaraugus and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Bed-Pan, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a bed=pan adapted for both natural and douche uses, and particularly applicable to female patients; and the object of the same is to provide a simple and effective device of this class which can be applied from either side of a bed and used in either one of two positions and of an antiseptic nature, means being supplied in connection therewith for carrying 01f liquids running or deposited therein to either side of a bed, and the main body of the device so shaped that its application will be rendered easy and comfortable to the patient.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed-pan embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is alongitudinal vertical section of the same.

Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

The numeral 1 designates the body of th pan, which is of elliptical-edge contour and of elongated extent, the said body. sloping downwardly in all directions toward the center. From opposite ends the body slopes inwardly and downwardly in straight planes; but transversely the body at the center slopes inwardly and downwardly in curved lines. At the lowermost central point'of the said body are a plurality of transversely alined openings 2, which communicate with a lower drain-chamber 3, preferably of the form in cross-section shown by Fig. 3, the said chamber being enlarged toward its outer end 4 and provided with a lower nipple 5 for the attachment of a rubber or other flexible tube 6. The tube 6 may be of any desired length to extend over the bed and down one side thereof into a suitable receptacle to catch and hold the liquid drained from the body 1. The bottom 7 of the chamber 3 is inclined down wardly, as clearly shown by Fig. 2, to facilitate the drainage of liquid therefrom, and

said bottom contin ues regularly into the lower portion of the nipple 5 without the least obstruction, and thereby prevents lodgment of sediment or other material, the entire interior surfaceof the chamber being smooth and without the least projection, so that it may be easily cleaned and sterilized. The body 1 can also be easily cleansed and sterilized, and the advantages of cleanliness in this class of devices are preeminent in the present form. At a point diametrically opposite the chamber 3 the body is provided with an open angular support or prop 8, which operates to maintain the said body in proper position when applied.

In applying the improved pan it may be placed longitudinally between the limbs of the patient and extend partially upward over the rear of the lower portion of the body of the patient or be disposed transversely, the said positions being regulated by the conditions and mode of treatment demanded or the necessary use in the most convenient manner.

The improved device is particularly adaptedfor douche or injection operations performed on female patients, and in all its uses and applications both the clothing of the patient and that on the bed or couch will be prevented from being soiled by reason of the form set forth.
