To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. HUXLEY, of Quincy, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this 1o spccication.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of valves in which the movable part or closure member is actuated by an eudwisemoving valve-stem having screw-threaded I5 connection with the casing.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing the figure is a longitudinal zo section of a valve embodying the improvements designated and set forth in the accompanying claims.
Referring to the drawing, A is a valve-casing provided at its ends with hollow cylindrical sockets a in axial line with each other,
adapted by the provision of interior screwthreads a for the usual pipe connection. Said valve-casing contains two valve-seats a2 a3, secured therein by screw-threads. Said 3o valve-seats are centrally disposed in said casing with their corresponding faces making opposite angles to the axis of said cylindrical sockets and having their centers substantially in line with the centers of said sockets.
Said valve-seats are of the pattern described in Patent No. 625,954, issued May 30, 1899, to me, and therefore are not claimed in this application. Said valve-seats have their central apertures of such a size that the edges of 4 a said apertures are without the lines of straight iiow between the connecting-'sockets c', and thereby afford a substantially straight course for the flow of fluid through said valve-casing. Said valve-casing is provided with lateral cylindric extensions awhose longitudinal axes are perpendicular to the said valveseats a2 as at their respective centers and which have circular apertures Whose annular faces are perpendicular to said axes. Bushings E are frictionally engaged in said heads D bctween interior flanges (Z2 of said heads and 55 screw-plugs G, secured in the outer ends of said heads. Said plugs G are centrally apertured for the passage of valve-stems b and c, which have screw-threaded engagement with said bushings E and carry at their inner ends 6o valve-disks b' and c', adapted to close on said valve-seats. Said heads D, with the valvestems Z) and c,with their connecting bushings, screw-plugs, and flanges, follow the form of construction shown in an application made by me bearing even date herewith,and therefore are not claimed in this application. Said valve-closures are of the pattern described in Patent No. 625,954, issued May 30, 1899, to me, and are not claimed in this application. 7o Said lateral extensions are disposed so that when the valve-closures are retracted they are contained in said extensions wholly without the line of iiow through the valve-casing.
The operation of t-he valve is as follows: The valve is normally closed by the operation of the valve-closure b, which therefore may be considered the main 0r primary valve. In case of accident or need of repair to said closures B the secondary closure c, which is 8o placed between said valves and the inlet I-I, can be used to shut off the pressure from the valve-casing, allowing the examination and renewal of the parts of the valve-closure I) and the said valve-seat a2 without removing 85 the valve-@asin g A from its connection or cutting off the pressure from said connection at a point remote from said casinff.
The special utility of the valve shown lies in the disposition of the several parts. 'Vhen 9o the valve-closure b and the secondary closure c are not in operation, they are Withdrawn to a point entirely Without the line of flow. The arrangement of the valve-seats is such that they do not in any way obstruct the iiow. By this construction a valve is obtained which allows repair and renewal while under pressure and at the same time does not restrict the flow between parts which it connects.
I claim as my inventionl. A valve comprising a hollow casing containing two valve-seats disposed with their IOO faces at opposite angles to the principal axis of said casing, and valve-closures adapted to close on said valveseats, said valve-closures and valve-seats being arranged to give unrestricted flow through said casing when said valve is open.
2. A valve comprising a hollow casing having a main valve seat and closure, and a secondary valve seat and closure, said secondary Valve-seat being arranged obliquelj,7 to and in the line of How from the inlet to the primary Valve-seat, said closures being adapted to be retracted beyond said line of flow, and said seats being disposed to give unrestricted flow through said casing when said valves are open.
3. A valve comprising a hollow casing having two connecting nipples at opposite ends in line with each other, obliquely-disposed lateral extensions, cylindric heads secured to said extensions, valve-seats secured in said casing in line with said connecting nipples, and valve-closures actuated by endwise-moving stems having screw threaded connection with said heads.
4. A valve comprising a hollow casing having two connecting nipples at opposite ends, and lateral extensions located at the same side thereof, valve-seats disposed obliquely and in line with said nipples, and va1ve-clo sures provided with valve-stems, said parts being so arranged that when the valve closures are withdrawn they are entirely without the line of flow through the valvecasing,and when they are seated the pressure acts against the outer face of one or the inner face of the other of said closures.
