UNITED STATES PATENT i OFFICE,
ROBBERT E. IIOBGOOD, OF DEXTER, MISSISSIPPL HARROW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 681,395, dated August 27, 190i.
Application iiled J'uly 23, 1900- Serial No. 24,500. (No model.)
Improvements in Harrows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,- and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which,
it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in harrows, and -is what is known as a side harrow.
The main object of my invention is the provision o'f a harrow which by reason of the inovability of its teeth readily adapts itself for harrowing ground preparatory to sowing seeds, for cultivating young corn or cotton, and for clearing the ground in front of a drill.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a side harrow embodying in its construction simplicity, durability, and cheapness, thus producing a very useful and practical harrow.
To attain the desired objects my invention consists ot` a side harrow embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my complete harrow. Fig. 2 is a crosss'ectioln between the frame and one tooth.
Fig. 3 is a modified form of frame and tooth connection.
Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of teeth.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the center piece or bar of the frame, said bar being provided with the two vertical openings B, through which are adapted to pass the bolts C, to which are secured the metal arms D and E. A beam Fis secured to the bar by means of the bolt which holds the arm D to the bar, and a shortbolt G passes through the beam and secures the upper or outer ends of the arms to the beam, said arms acting as braces for the beam. Upon the ends of the beam are secured the clevis and handle, respectively, both of well-known construction. Recesses or slots H are formed in the front surface of the center bar, in which are adapted to fit the upper ends of the teeth J, which are more securely held in place by means of the front and back plates K and the bolts L, which pass through said plates, teeth, and bar. These teeth are formed with the curved intermediate portion M, terminating in the point N. Secured in the recess in the' forward end of the bar or frame is a tooth O, which is provided with a slot P in its lower end, and adapted to be secured in saidslot, and consequently to the lower end of the tooth, is the half sweep Q, and secured to the rear recess is a similar tooth carrying a whole sweep R.
From this description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that I pro# vide asim ple, durable, and inexpensive har# row which is very useful and practical. y
In Fig. 3 I have shown a frame which dis# penses with the rear and front plates, thus making the harrow much lighter in weight and allowing the teeth to be clamped in the' frame, as shown.
In a side harrow the combination of a beam, a clevis and a handle connected to said beam, said beam being also provided with a pair of openings for reception of bolts intery mediate of its length, a center bar secured tfy the beam by means of'the bolt near the handle, and at an angle to the beam, recesses provided in the forward edge of the ban-'teeth fitting in said recesses, plates fitting upon the front and rear sides of the bars, said `plates being adapted tobe clamped tightly against the bar to hold the teeth in said recesses, a brace secured to the upper side of the beam by means of a bolt in the forward opening of the beam and to the under side of the bar, and another brace secured to the under side of the beam by the same bolt and to the under side of the bar by means of the lower ends of the bolt that secures the beam and the bar together.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
ROBBERT E. HOBGOOD.
