(Application filed Nov. 28, 1900.)
(No Model.)
V INVENTO)? In: Noam: Finns ca. momuwm wlsumcvon, u. c.
UNITED STATES T 60% whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, IRA F. BESSEY and WESLEY A. BLACK, citizens of the, United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and usefullmprovements in Gas- Fittings, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to gas fixtures or fittings; and the object thereof is to provide an ordinary gas device of this class with avalve and valve-casing so constructed that the valve will be locked or partially locked in a closed position and in the operation thereof will indicate when it is in a closed position and which will also indicate when it is partially closed and which will also be locked or partially locked when in the partially-closed position and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device or devices of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of whichthe accompanying drawingsform a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved gas'fixture, and Fig. 2 a view at right angles thereof and showing the valve in cross-section.
In the practice of our invention we provide a gas fixture or fitting (1, having a valve-casing b, through which is passed a valve 0. The valve-casing b is provided at one side with a collar or rim d, and formed therein at the opposite sides thereof are two notches or recesses e and f, and one side of the collar or rim d i is also provided in the inner side thereof with a groove g. The valve o is provided with a transversely-movable plug h, which is set into a cavity formed therein, and placed in said cavity rearwardly of said plug is a spring k, which operates normally to forcesaid plug outwardly.
The side Walls of the notches or recesses e and f are beveled or inclined, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and when the valve 0 is turned, which is done by means of the handle m, said PATENT EEICE.

GAS -FITTING.
.SBEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 681,183, dated August 27, 190 1.
Application filed November 28, 1900. Serial No. 37,987. (No model.)
plug 7t will move back and forth therein, and when Isa gas can pass through the fixture or fitting, the plug 71. will be in a position at right angles to that shown at Fig. 2. When in this position of the plug h,if the valve be turned in either direction the plug h will first enter one of the notches or recesses f, which will indicate that it is partly closed, and a slight additional pressure on the valve will turn it farther, and the plug will enter one of the notches or re-. cesses e.
id valve is fully opened, so that the When the plug h is in one of the notches or recesses f, the valve will be slightly opened, so as to permit a small amount of gas to pass therethrough, which is frequently necessary and desirable in order that a small flame may be kept burning; but when the plug his in one of the notches or recesses e the passage through the fixture or fitting will be entirely out oif and no gas can pass therethrough. This device is simple in construction and operation and particularly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and by means thereof the danger of leaving the gas turned on when it is not ignited is largely if not totally obviated, as is also the danger of turning the valve so as to permit the gas to pass therethrough after it has once been turned cit.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A gas fitting or fixture provided with a transverse valve-casing having at one end a collar or rim in the opposite sides of which are two notches or recesses, and a valve mounted in said valve-casing and provided with a transversely-movable spring-operated plug which, in the operation of the valve, is adapted to enter said notches or recesses, substantially as shown and described.
2. A gas fitting or fixture provided with a transverse valve-casing having at one end a collar or rim in the opposite sides of which are two notches or recesses, and a valve mounted in said valve-casing and provided with a transversely-movable spring-operated adapted to enter said notches or recesses, said collar or rim being also provided with a groove which extends from the notches or recesses 5 on one side to those on the other, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names, in
snis
presence of the subscribing witnesses,th;is 24th day of November, 1900.
