@auch faire atwt @Hire FRANK. J. PLUMMEE, 0E WoEcESTEn MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR To n.. BALL e 00 or SAME PLAGE,
meer@ am No. 68,108, dated Augusta?, V1867,
IMPRQVEMENT 'IN cLUreEfSHIPrEEs.
KNOW ALL MEN BY lI-IlllSllv PRESENTS:
That I,.FRANK J. PLUMMER, of' the city and county of Worcester, andCommonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in. Clutch-Shippers; and I do hereby declare that therfollcwing is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in :which- Figure l represents an end view of my improved clutch.
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal central section on line A B, iig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by arrow 1, and v Y v Figure Srepresents a vertical section-en -linc C D, iig. 1, looking in the direction indicated-by 4arrow 2.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make-and use the same, I will proceed to describe it. v
In the drawings,.the part marked Atreprcscnts so much of the main frame of a planing machine as is necessary to illustrate my inventionL- The partB is the box or bearing, in which'shaft Gis supported, the upper part being cast with a flange, D, Yto fit the inside of the frame A, and to which it'is fastened by bolts z. Frein the `lower part of-the bols projects the slide-supporting piece E, having a shoulder, b, anda tongne, c, which enters the slot 0l in the Slide piece Fl The latter is held in place by the plate or cnpV e screwed orbolted to the lower edge or face of tongue c, as indicated in the drawings.` The slide piece Fis provided with an'angular or inclined slet,f, into which a tongue, g', upon the lower side of the 'clasp G enters. Tongue g is shownlin dotted lines tige. 2 and 3. Clasp G is composedv of two pieces held together and clasped in the groove 1 in the cluteh-hubI, which is provided with wing-plates h h, into which clutch-dogs may be inserted in theordinary manner. In lieu of clutch-dogs and wing-plafes7t the .end of the hub, I, may be made with a series of clutch-teeth to take into clutch-teeth on theihub of a loose pulley placed or running iipon` the round part of anex'tension of shaft C -in the usual manner. Y'Clutch-hub Iris grooved or slotted out, so as to slide on the spline Zinshaft C, while the clasp Gis keptfrom turning by means of its shoulders 3 3 bearing ortitting'agains'the projections 4' 4 the box Bi `These projections 4 4 are madeV with narrow bearing edges, so that there but littlev friction en the clasp Grv as the latter is moved back and forth. v
The operation is as follows r. The operator, by means of lever J or in some other proper manner, forces slide piece forward, as shown in red lines, iig. 2, thereby causing the clasp G, clutch-hub I, and the parts 'fastened thereto,-to move ont, as indicated in red lines., same figure. It will be sccn that if the wing-'plates t tV had' ordinary clutch-dogs, and the shaft C were extended and had a running. pulley ou the end provided lwith clutch-teeth, every time the hub I and the parts connected therewith were forced out', a's indicated in ned lines,
iig. 2, motion would be communicated toshaft G tc drive the machine in the ordinary manner, only so much of'shaft C being shown in this instance as is necessary'to' illustrate my invention. In lieu ofthe ppcho-x B a divided box may housed, and fastened together by bolts or screws.- Although my invention 'is shown' applied to ,the frame of a planing machine, it 'rnightrbe used in some cases with good effect when applied to other machines. V l
4Having described my improvedA clutch, what Iclnirn` :is-ncrv andof my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y i Y Y `1.. The combination with the4 projection E of box B, and tongue e'of the slotted slide I" and cape, substantially as and for the purposesu set forth. l I
2. The'combination with `frame A, double slotted 'or grooved slide -picce F, claspG, and clutch-hub Lief the-box Il, having a flange, D, and projections E and 4 4 arranged and combincdtogether for use'sulistantially as set forth.
' FRANK' J. PLUMEILER.
