FILE-BINDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,349, dated August 13, 1901.

To all whom, it may concern:

- Be it known that LWILLIAM P. N ORTHOOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File-Binders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of binders in which sheets or other matter may be inserted for the purpose of filing away. To appreciate this particular class, it will be only necessary to state that there is another type of binders called temporary binders, in

which leaves or other matter are inserted while being used, and this particular class to which my invention relates is for the purpose of taking those leaves that have been duly transcribed or filled with memoranda, records, or other matter and filing them away.

The object of my invention, therefore, is to provide a simple, economical, and efficient file-binder; and the invention consists in the features, combinations, and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a complete file and binder constructed and arranged in accordance with my improvements; Fig. 2, an enlarged sectional View of a portion of the same, taken on line 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a plan view of a portion of one of the metallic binderplates.

In the art to which this invention relates it is well known that in the use of temporary binders the leaves or other matter which are inserted therein temporarily for the purpose of inspection or transcribing of records, 850., have eventually to be filed away, and various kinds of file-binders have been constructed for this purpose, most of which have inherent defects or objections. My invention is intended, primarily, to provide a suitable filebinder in which leaves may be inserted from time to time until filled and which when filled or partially filled are practically complete and in book form.

In constructing a binder in accordance with my improvements I provide two metallic binding plates or strips A and A, which have their lateral edges folded or rounded over, as at a, so that the cloth or other material I)" of which the cover is formed may be passed around the same and when contacted by the desk or other objects will not be destroyed, cut, or otherwise marred. To these binding strips or plates are flexibly secured the covers B and B, so that they may be opened and closed, the hinging portion 19 being arranged between them and the rigid metallic bindingstrips. These metallic binding strips are provided with perforations ct, through which the binding-bolts C may be passed, so that leaves 0 may be inserted whenever desired for the purpose of filing them away.

The advantages incident to a binder const-ructed in. accordance with my improvements are, first, that the completed file is book-like in appearance and may be used with all the advantage of a book; second, the peculiar formation of the binding-strips permits the book to be handled on the desk without destroying the cloth which forms a portion of the cover, and, third, the peculiar formation of the binding-strips furnishes a recess in which the heads and nuts of the bolts may lie without danger of marring the table or desk.

I claim- 1. In a file-binder the combination of two cover-leaves each provided with a flexible portion having an inner and an outer fold, a perforated binding-strip between the inner and outer fold of each of the cover-leaves each provided with rounded edges extending above the body portion of the strip and integral therewith forming a recess between such rounded portions, and a plurality of threaded bolts extending through andconnecting the binding-strips and cover-leaves and each provided with a head and threaded nut upon their respective ends within the recess formed by the rounded portions of the binding-strips, substantially as described.

2. In a filo-binder the combination of two cover-leaves each provided with a flexible portion having an inner and outer fold and a rigid portion, a perforated metallic bindingstrip having rounded edges extending above the body portion thereof and integral therewith arranged between the outer and inner folds of the flexible portion of each of the cover-leaves, a, plurality of bolts extending through and connecting the binding-strips and having their ends within the recesses between the rounded portions of the strips, and

means for adjusting the strips and holding them in position upon the boltsysubstantially as described.
