TO lALL WHOM-IT MAY QON CERN: I V
Bc it know-n that I, ELU-AH WARE, of Bayonne, Hudson coiinty, New Jersey, have invented a new and improvcdGearing for Steam-Carriages, nete.; and I do hereby declare that the following "is a full, clear, and exact description thereofwhich will enable others skilled in the art to malte and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, 4forming part of this specification. l Y
This invention relates anew andimproved method of altering the speed and thereby increasing the power used in the propulsion of steam-carriages, and for other purposes; and it consists in a combination of wheels which operate so that the gearwhcels may be made to exert increased power when desired, as will be described more fully hereinafter.` i I Figurell is a vertical section through the line a: x', g, fig. 2.*
Figure 2 is cross-section through the line y y, g,g. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parte. Y l
A represents a shaft or the .axle of a steam-carriage. B is a pulley, which `is attached to a sleeve, B', through' Vwhichl the shaft or axle passes. -C is a spur-gear wheel, which is attached to the sleeve B. D is a reversing-wheel with ratchet recesses on .its'periphei-y, and which is lmoved around the sleeve B on its own. centre i marked'D. The mitre-gear, marked E, is attached to this reversing-wheel D. Within the Vpulley-B there are A four `initre-wheels, which engage with each other', as seenin the drawings. Thcthreerother mitre-,gears are coavlced'F, G, 'and H.' E and VHere attachedtolthe pulley, and revclve'on` stud-pins whichore secured to arms ff cast on the pulley B, as seen in the drawing. i The inner ends of Vthese stud-pins are-secured to the sleeve fB. The mitrewheel G isl attached vto a plate-wheel marked'd', which is permanently attached to the shaft or axle A. K is a. break-wheel, which is placed loosely on vthe shaftf* Ithas a groove around its periphery, and
is encircled by` a band which is `attached to a break-lever, the short cndof which is seen at J', lig; l. This i break-wheel is connected. with th'eplate-wheel J by jointed levers m and n, which levers operate cccentrics on the inner side of J. l These' accenti-ics are blocksbf metalfwhich, when turned by the levers, come in contact .v with the inner surface ofthe band-wheel or pulley B, either retarding or stopping the motion. P, 2, is a double pawl, which is operated by the lever Q. 4These pau-ls engagewith either side of the wheel, according to the direction which it is desired to have themachinc run. Y The lpawls maybe placed with the wheelvintermedate, in which case the whole arrangement revolves together. To diminish the speed one-half, and .to double the power,
., it icfc'nly necessaryto stop the wheel by one of the pawls. The mitre-wheel E then stops also and becomes 4the fdlcrurn of the other gears. l Y
' "I do not confine myself to this particular arrangement, as it will bc'seen that by varying the size and proportions of the mitre or bevelfgearing the power may bo increased accordingly. The power can be taken either from the pulley B or. the spur-gear wheel ),.and the arrangement may be applied to lathes and other purposes,
as well as to steam-carriages. 4In the latter application I have .found it of great advantage in ascending heavy grades and inpassing over rough and nncven roads with my steam-carriage, for which I have already received- Letters Patent. The shaft A mayeither represent the -axlelor a counter-shaft, according as the pow-er is applied.
Having thus described niy"i|;wentio'n,` whatI claiin as nemend desire to secure by Letters'lPatent, is-
' 1.y The combination of 'gear-wheels G E F arranged substantially as herein-described .for the purpose specicd. Y .i u l2. I 'claim the rnnningwhee1 D, the breakfwheel K, the pulley B, and the double ratchet P, in combination 1 with the gear-wheels, "substantially as described.
' 3. I claim the break-wheel K, in combination withthe gear-whcels, as described.
' 'The above specification ofmy invention signed by me this 21st day-of March, 1867. i f
