UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM w. WYTHE, oE RED BANK, NEW JERSEY.
HOISTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,305, dated June 12, 1883.
Application filed November 6, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. WYTHE, of Red Bank, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Hoisting Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My improvements relate to hoisting apparatus or machines fitted for op eration by means of a hand-wheel and rope or by a crank-handle, the object being to obtain an apparatusof compact form for use in lifting heavy weights, and to prevent loss of power by friction, so as to obtain an effective use of the power applied to the hand wheel or crank.
To these ends my invention consists in gearing of peculiar construction and arrangement, as-hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved hoisting apparatus, the frame being partially removed. Fi 2 is an end view of the same.
A is the frame, which may be of any suitable construction.
a is a shaft, carrying the wheel B, provided with a hand-rope, b; and c is a shaft on which is fixed a chain or sprocket wheel, (I, with a hoisting-chain, 6.
Upon the shaft 0 are two wheels or disks,
f f, formed at their edges with. teeth the spaces between these teeth being of suitable form, and the two wheels are placed so that the teeth come alternately to each other.
Upon the sh aft a are fixed two diametricallyopposed cams, h h, one cam being in the plane of one of the wheels f and the other in the plane of the other wheelf. These cams are preferably of the heart shape shown; but they may be of any other suitable form or shape.
In operation, power being applied to the hand-wheel to rotate the shaft a, the wheelsf and the shaft 0 are rotated by the action of the cams h upon the wheels, each cam acting alternately, so that a continuous rotation of other wheel. By this construction and arrangement of gearing the parts can be made of great strength and in compact form, and at the same time a relative proportion of the gearing can be had in order to obtain great powerfor lifting heavy weights to an extent which would be impracticable with ordinary gearing unless a wheel of very large diameter were used. This allows the apparatus to be placedin situations where the head-room is limited. At the same time there is but little power expended in friction, so that a large percentage of the power applied to theshaft a. is effective in raising the weight.
I do not limit myself to the special location and arrangement of the chain-wheel in connection with the toothed wheels, as shown. If desired, the chain-wheel may be placed upon a separate shaft and the gearing multiplied to obtain greater power.
The apparatus will also be fitted with brake mechanism of any suitable character, and instead of a wheel and hand-rope the shaft a may be operated by a crank.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. I11 hoisting apparatus, the combination of the toothed wheels ff, fixed upon one shaft, and the two cams h h upon a second shaft, and in the plane of the toothed wheels for engagement therewith, substantially as shown and described.
, In hoisting apparatus, the combination of the two toothed wheels ff upon the chain- 7 wheel shaft and the cams h upon the operatingshaft, placed for engagement alternately with the toothed wheels, substantially as shown and described.
IVILLIAM W. IVYTHE.
