UNITED 5 STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CABEL B. HOPKINS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE ENTERPRISE MANUFACTURING COMPANY OF PENNSYLVANIA, OF SAME PLACE.
SHARPENI NG ATTACHMENT FOR BEEF-SHAVING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,045, dated August 6, 1901. Application filed October 10, 1899. Serial No- 733,191. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CABEL B. HOPKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Sharpening Attachments for Beef-Shaving Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in sharpening devices for rotary beefshavers. d
The object of my invention is to provide a sharpening device that can be arranged as a permanent fixture on the machine, and yet can be thrown into or out of action, as desired, without dismantling the machine. This object I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a rotary foodshaver, illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view with the cap-plate removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the sharpening device in action. Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the sharpening device out-of action, and Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of the sharpener.
A is the frame of the machine, having a trough a, into which the beef or other food to be shaved is placed.
B is a shaft which is rotated by a suitable hand-wheel B, geared to the shaft in any suitable manner. On the end of the shaftB is a knife-frame B, carrying curved blades b of the form shown in the drawings, and as 3 5 the shaft is revolved these blades make a shear out past the end of the trough a.
I do not claim in this application any of the above-described mechanism, as my in vention relates solely to the sharpening 'de- 4b vice.
, Mounted loosely on the shaft B is a carrier D, having a projecting portion (1, to which is pivoted a lever E at e. On the long arm of this lever is the sharpener E, in the present instance in the form of an ordinary steel. Bearing against the short arm of the lever is a spring j, attached to the carrier D. This spring tends to force the sharpener toward the knives.
5b The sharpener passes through a slot g in the casing G, inclosing the knife, and is adapted to a guide I, attached to or forming part of the casing. At one end of this guide is a yielding stop 1', and pivoted to the guide is a latch 1 provided with a suitable handle, so that when the latch is placed in the position shown in Fig. 4 it holds the sharpener out of the path of the knives; but when the latch is released the sharpener is forced by its spring against the edge of each knife, and as each knife passes the sharpener it will bear against the entire curved surface of the knife, thus sharpening the knives uniformly.
In the machine shown in the drawings I provide lugs b, which are formed in the present instance on the hub of the knife-frame B for the purpose of preventing the sharpener from falling back of the knife-blades as they move forward, so as to prevent accident in the event of the shaft B being turned backward.
The form of the sharpener may be modified without materially departing from the main feature of my invention, which is to provide a sharpener for a rotary food-shaving machine which can be readily thrown into and out of action.
It will be understood that While I have shown my improved sharpening device on a rotary food-shaver in which two knife-blades are used a single knife-blade may be used, or more than two blades may be used, depending altogether upon the character of the machine to which the sharpener is attached.
I claim as my invention-- l. The combination in a food-shaving machine, of a rotating knife having one or more blades beveled on one side, and a sharpener pivoted at or near the axis of rotation and constructed to be rotated about its pivotal point in order to bring it into its sharpening position, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a food-shaving machine, of a rotating knife having one or more blades beveled on one side, a lever pivoted 5 at or near the axis of rotation of the knife, said lever supporting on one arm, a sharpening device constructed to bear against the beveled portion of the. blade or blades, and means acting on the other arm of the lever beveled blades, a leverpivoted at or near the axis of rotation of the knife, one arm of said lever supporting a sharpening device con strueted to bear against the beveled portion of the blade or blades, means acting on the other arm of the lever to force the sharpening device into contact with the knife and means constructed to be applied to the arm of the lever carrying said sharpening device, normally holding the same out of. contact with the knife, substantially as described.
at. The combination in a rotary food-shaver having a trough, a shaft, means for rotating the same, knives on the shaft adapted to shear past the end of the trough, a carrier on the end of the shaft, a lever pivoted to the carrier, a sharpener attached to one arm of the lever and adapted to bear against the knives as they are revolved, a spring bearing against the lever tending to keep the sharpener in contact with the knives, and a guideway for the sharpener, substantially as described.
5. The combination in a rotary food-shaver, of a revolving shaft, one or more knife-blades carried thereby, a pivoted sharpener adapted to rest against the knives and lugs on the hub of the knife-carriercontrolling the position of the sharpener, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination of a food-shaving machine, consistingof a frame, a trough for the food to be cut, a shaft, one or more knives on the said shaft, a casing inclosing the knives, a sharpening device withinthe casing adapted to be thrown into and out of contact with the knives, and means exterior of the casing for holding the sharpener out of contact, substantially as described. y
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CABEL B. HOPKINS.
