DEVICE FOR RIVIOVING WATEROF CONDENSATION.
SPECEELCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,040, dated August 6, 1901.

Be it known that I, PETER J. HARLEMAN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Removing Water of Condensation, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in drying apparatus, and especially to a device for removing the water of condensation from the condenser.
The object of my invention is to remove the water of condensation from the condenser used in connection with the drying of the fabric in the manufacture of cotton or paper or in connection with other machinery where it is necessary to remove the water of condensation.
My invention consists of certain novel features hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
'In the accom panyingdrawings, which illus trate a construction embodying my invention, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view through the condenser with the device for removing the water of condensation in full lines. Fig. 2 is an end view of a device for removing the water of condensation. Fig. 3 is an end view through the opposite side of the device for removing the water of condensation. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the condenser with the device for removing the water of condensation in full lines and showing the positions of the water during its removal from the condenser.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
A represents a cylinder having the opposite heads B and C. The head Bis provided with a hollow shaft D, which is fixed fast to the driving-wheel E, which rotates the cylinder A. The shaft D and the hollow sleeve C form bearings for the cylinder A in its revolution.
Located loosely on the inner end of the steam-pipe F is a hub G, which is provided with a screw H of dierential pitch, which screw is attached to the hub G and is fixed fast within the hollow cylinder in the position shown in Figs. 1 and et by fitting it closely in the inner sides of said cylinder, so that it moves with the cylinder at all times and the Serial No. 21,615. (No model.)
water ofcondensation passes to the outlet through the spiral passage O of the screw H, which screw is located transversely to the axis of rotation of said cylinder and is inclined to said axis of rotation. The end J of the screw H is made of a pitch greater than the pitch of the rest of the screw, so as to bring within the screw as large an amount of water as possible. The only outlet for the water of condensation is through the spiral passage O, as the screw H extends from the central hub G outwardly in all directions and fits closely within the cylinder.
The steam enters through the pipe F into the interior of the cylinder A, where it is condensed and falls to the bottom of the cylinder, as indicated. As the point J of the screw H engages the water of condensation in its revolution with the cylinder it causes the space between the point J and the next thread of the screw H to become lled with water, which is lifted at each revolution by the additional water coming behind it until it reaches the outlet Kin the hollow shaft D,
and then passes through the stuffing-box L to ceptacles or buckets which engage the water l in the bottom of the cylinder and conduct it by gravity to the center when the said bucket revolves through the upper half of its revolution. In cylinders which revolve at high rates of speed the centrifugal force of the water in the bucket exerts against the force of gravity and retards the free delivery of the Water of condensation.
I do not limit myself to the arrangement and construction shown, as the same may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus ascertained the nature of my invention and set forth a construction embodying the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. In an apparatus of the character described, a revolving cylinder, a steam-inlet, a water-outlet, and a device located transversely to the axis of rotation of said cylinder and inclined to said axis for removing IOO through its passage the Water of condensation from said cylinder and closing communication between said inlet and said outlet except through its said passage.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, a revolving cylinder, a steam-inlet, a water-outlet, and a screw for removing the water of condensation through its spiral passage from the cylinder to the outlet.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, a revolving cylinder, a steam-inlet, a water-outlet, and a screw of diiterential pitch for removing the water of condensation through its spiral passage from the cylinder to the outlet.
4. In an apparatus of the character described, a revolving cylinder, a steam-inlet, a Water-outlet, and a device inclined to the axis of rotation of said cylinder and located between said inlet and said outlet for removing the water of condensation from the cylinder through its spiral passage which establishes communication between said inlet and said outlet and through which passage said water of condensation passes to the outlet.
5. In an apparatus ot the character described, a revolving cylinder, a steam-inlet, a water-outlet, and a screw located between said inlet and said outlet at the outlet end of the cylinder for removing the Water of condensation through its spiral passage from the cylinder to the outlet.
6. In an apparatus of the character described, a revolving cylinder, a steam-inlet, a Water-outlet, and a screw of differential pitch located between said inlet and said outlet at the outlet end of the cylinder for removing the water of condensation through its spiral passage from the cylinder to the outlet.
7. In an apparatus of the character described, a revolving cylinder, a steam-inlet, a water-outlet, and a screw fast in said cylinder and located between said steam-inlet tween said steain-inlet and' said water-outlet for removing the water of condensation throughits spiral passage from the cylinder to the outlet and closing communication between'said inlet and said outlet except through said spiral passage.v
9. In an apparatus of the character described, a revolving cylinder, a steam-inlet, a water-outlet surrounding said steam-inlet, a screw fast in said cylinder and located between said steam-inlet and said water-outlet for removing the water of condensation through its spiral passage from the cylinder to said outlet and having its hub located o n the steam-inlet, anda driving-wheel secured to said water-outlet for revolving the cylinder.
10. In an apparatus of the character de-v scribed, a revolving cylinder, a steam-inlet,
a water-outlet surrounding said steam-inlet,
a screw of differential pitch fast in said cylinder and located between said steam-inlet and said water-outlet for removing the water of condensation through its spiral passage from the cylinder to said outlet and having its hub located on the steam-inlet, and a driving-wheel secured to said water-outlet for revolving the cylinder.
