CAR SEAL.
(Application filed Oct. 22, 1900.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrc-n.
ALFRED P. MILLERQOF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO TI-IE'MlLLER CAR Loca e SEAL COMPANY, or SAME PLACE.
GAR-SEAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,979, dated August 6, 1901.
Application filed October 22,1900. S ri l N 33,390 (No model.)
'To all whom to may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFREDP. MILLER, a
resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain 5 new and useful Improvements in Oar-Seals,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to car-seals; and its object is to provide a simple and efficient seal made from a single strip and having a novel construction for fastening or sealing the ends together. i
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of the blank, tun size; Fig. 2, a similar View of a completed seal; Fig. 3, an edge View of the same; Fig. 4, an edge view of thestrip sealed; Fig. 5, a section on 'line 5 5 of Fig.- 6; Fig.6, an enlarged View of one end of a seal, showing one face, Fig. 7 showing the other face; and Fig. 8, an enlarged perspective of the cup end of thestrip or blank. i
As a convenient method of manufacture and as particularly well illustrating this li'lvention the blank may be out to form the, strip 1, with the round ends 2 and 3. end'2 has asmall hole 4:,while the end 3 has a comparatively large hole The end 3 is struck up so as to form a cup-6, whose diameter equals that of'the end 2, which is in tended to iit in such cup. On the end 2 is formed an. eyelet 7, which is made of a size to pass through the hole 5,- -'l-lii s. eyelet is preferably made slightly truncated, conical in form, soas to readily find the hole 5. As
shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2, similar triangular spacesS are cut out near the end 3,
so that the cup may be formed continuous except for a narrow opening 53, justwide enough to receive the narrow neck 10, immediately below the end 2 of the strip.
The strip being passed through the parts to be locked or sealed, the ends of the seal are brought together, with the end 2 resting in the cup 6 and its eyelet 7 passing through the hole 5. By a snitahledouble-acting press the eyelet is now upset against the end 3, and the cup is folded over upon the end 2. The resulting seal is clearly shown in Figs. atto 7 of the drawings.
When the cup'is formed, there result projecting pointsll at the opening 9. These points are advantageous not only because The 2 I eyelet, the said hole receivingsnch eyelet and they afiord an extended binding-surface, as
shown in Fig. -7, but also because they aseach other firmly against possibility of iocs- 6c ening oncoming apart. In fact, the seal cannot be removed without breaking it.
So far as the feature of the cup is broadly concerned it-Will be understood that such cup maybe used in connection with the eye- 65 let feature or not, as may be desired, an efficient seal being provided by simply bending thecup over theend of the seal which is re ceived within it.
It is evident that obvious changes maybe made in the sizes and proportions of parts and that equivalent constructions may be adopted without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and claims.
The end 30f the strip after being struck up forms practically cup-shaped portion, which in the absence of a better term I am pleased to call a cnp,- although it may have a side opening and in the preferred form a bottom opening. So-
I claim- 1. A car-,seal formed in a single piece and comprising a strip having at one end, and integral therewith, a cup to receive within it the other end of the strip overwhich such cup is folded down.
23. Acar-Seal c'omprisingastrip having near one-end a hole and also having a cup, the other end of the strip being provide-l with an the cup receiving within it s the strip.
3. A car-seal comprising a strip having at one end a cup with a side opening Sand having its other end formed so as t bereceived within the cup and provided with a neck 10 entering sa-idopening, the cup being folded over upon the strip received'within it.
f A car-seal comprising a strip 1 having at one end a hole 5 and also a cup i with side opening 9 and'having at its other end 2' an eyelet 7 and a neck 10, the end 2 entering.
nch other end of 1 ,ing sn'cheyelh and the'cup receiving-within,-
