JAMES W. DAVIS, OF TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 67 9,606, dated July 30, 1901.
Application filed August 8, 1900.
To all whom, it may concern: i
Be it known that I, JAMES W. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Traverse City, in the county of Grand Traverse and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Driers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clothes-driers, the object being to provide a device of this character of simple and inexpensive construction which may be folded into a small compass when not desired for use and which is so constructed and supported as to adapt it to be conveniently used.
The construction of the improvement will with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and its novel features will be particularly pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of a clothes-drier embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The reference-numeral l designates a standard or support, to the upper end of which is secured a keeper 2, comprising a metallic strap, the ends of which are bent at right angles to embrace the sides of the standard 1, to which said ends are secured by any suitable means.
3 represents a post, the lower end of which extends through the keeper 2 and is bifurcated to fit over a pin 4, projecting from the standard 1 and carrying a retaining-washer 4?. The lower portion of the post 3 is square in cross-section, and to said squared portion is pivotally secured a catch-lever 5, forked at one end to embrace the post, to which it is pivotally secured by a pin The under surface of the catch-lever 5 is formed with a shoulder 7, which engages the keeper 2, as best shown in Fig. 2. The upper portion of the post 3 is circular in cross-section to serve as the axial support for the radial arms 8 of the drier and their supporting-braces 9.
Upon the upper end of the post 3 is secured a collar 10, surmounted or covered by a disk or cap 11, through which extends a securingscrew 12. Below the upper end of the post is also secured a collar 13, formed with an SerialNo. 26,301- (No model-l Each of the spiders l5 and 16 is provided with radial ears 17, which are arranged in pairs and between which the inner ends of the arms 8 and braces 9 are pivotally secured by pins 18. The lower ends of the braces 9 are pivotally secured to the radial arms 8. The spider 16 is adapted to slide up and down on the post 3 to distend the arms 8 and braces 9 to the position shown in the drawings, to fold said arms and braces against the post when the drier is not required for use. Below the collar 13 the post is formed with diametrically opposite recesses 19, within which are arranged spring-catches 20,which normally pro= ject outward at their upper ends to support the spider 16 in its elevated position and are adapted to be pressed inward by the fingers to permit the spider to be moved down upon the post when it is desired to fold the radial arms against the post. The upper surfaces of the arms 8 are provided with a plurality of eyes or loops 21, through which a clothes-line is adapted to be strung in the manner well known in devices of this character.
An important characteristic of my im* proved construction is that the lower end of the post 3 has a pivotal movement upon the pin 4: when the lever 5 is raised to disengage its shoulder 7 from the keeper 2. This permits the post to be tilted to an inclined position, which will lower the radial arm 8 at one side of the post and bring the clothes-line in a convenient position to have the clothes hung thereon, and by revolving the drier as the lines are filled the entire drier may be readily filled without walking around the drier. After the drier has been filled the post 3 is tilted back to a vertical position, which will cause the shoulder of the catch-lever 5 to drop back into engagement with the keeper 2 automatically.
The metallic collars add materially to the durability of the device, as they prevent wear upon the wooden post 3.
I claim- A clothes-drier comprising a standard hav- In testimony whereof I'affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES W. DAVIS.
