ADJUSTABLE CHAIR-BACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,312, dated July 30, 1901.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that LNATHANIEL B. HARMON, of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Adj ustable Chair-Backs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the drawings which accompany and form a part of the same.
My invention is designed to provide for a chair a back which may be adjusted at any desired angle to the plane of the chair-bottom and which may be fixed at any desired distance from the front of the chair. Its nature will be easily seen from'thefollowing description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows in perspective a chair with my device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1.
1 1 represent the base of achair, upon which are mounted supports 6 6 for the sides 4 4. The chair-back 5 is provided at its lower end with pins or rods 12, one on either side, which fit in corresponding grooves or sockets 13, so as to form therewith a hinge for the chair-back. I provide a series of these grooves 13 in each guide, (each groove being preferably curved, as shown,) so that the chair-back 5 may be adjusted forward or back by fitting the pins 12 into one or another of the pairs of grooves 13. Pivoted to the back-frame 5 at each side is an arm or lever 14, provided with a handle on one end, as shown, and on the other with alaterally-projecting pin or tooth 15, which is arranged to travel over and engage with a rack 16, which is fastened to the side bar or arm 4 of' the chair by any suitable means.
As will be understood readily, the chairback 5 may be fixed at any desired angle to the body of the chair by depressing the handles of the levers 14, (which are preferably connected by a rod 17, so that they may be operated simultaneously by depressing either,) and thereby lifting the pins 15 out of engagement with the rack 16, then swinging the chair-back upon the pivots or hinges 12 to the required position.
Other forms of adjusting devices forthe chair-back may be used instead of that illus trated in the drawings without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, although the pinan d-slot arrangement shown inthe drawings is preferred.
I have shown my present improvement as applied to a chair of the general character of that covered by an application for Letters Patent filed by me on February 23, 1900, Se rial No. 6,163, of which this application is a division; but I do not limit myself to any form of chair, as my improvement is of general application to chairs.
It will be observed that the depth of the chair may be increased or diminished by moving the back 5 farther away from or nearer to the front of the chair and that the angle of the chair-back may be adjusted by depressing the outer end of the lever or levers 15 until the pins 15 are lifted out of engagement with the rack 16 and swinging the chair-back 5 upon the pins 12 as a pivot into the desired position and then throwing the teeth 15 back into engagement with the rack 16. It is manifest that the various parts of the chair-frame which I have shown and described are typical or conventional in form, but I do not limit myself in matters of this sort. It will occur to any one that the device and arrangements which I show and describe may be varied widely without going beyond the scope of my invention.
What I claim is- 1. In a chair, the combination of side supports, each provided with a series of slots, a back-frame having on each side at the lower end a pin for engaging with said slots, side arms each carrying a rack and levers attached to said back and each provided at its outer end with a pin for engaging with one of said racks, substantially as and for the purposes described.
