YMPROYEMENT IN METALLIC TIPS.
@Llpfizhghul: mummin11 msetters-wormmummies-theme.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAYfC'OMEt Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FQ SPARROW, of Boston, in the county of Sufi'olk, and State of Massachusetts, have" invented a new and usefulImpl-ovement in Metallic Tips for boots or shoes, and in the application of such tips thereto; and I do hereby declare the sameto be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view.
Figure 2, a. front elevation,
Figure 3, e sidegelevation.
Figure 4, a. bottom view; and
Figure 5, a vertical section of the toe pnrt oi a hoot orshoe, with myinvention applied.
The common metallic tip, when applied to a. shoe, has core-red the toe ui'the upper alone; but with my intention it covers and protects the toe of the sole as well as that of the upper, and it is fastened toth'e edge of thesole.
In the-drawings, A denotes the upper, and B the sole of a. boot or shoe toe. The metallic tip isshown at C as composed of the upper and sole-guerds a b, united in one piece, the sole-guard b being applied to the edge of the toe, and fostened thereto by means of screws c c e, which go through the port b and screw into thesple.
I The sole-guard thus serves not only to support the tpeg uurd, but as a protection for the toe of the sole, to'prevent the letter from b'ei'ngworn or injured while the shoe or boot may be in use.
' I would remark that am aware of the metallic fender or device shown in the United Stat-es Patent No. 34,461, such being fol-protecting the toe parts of the upper leather.a.nd sole of a shoe. This device difl'ers frommine in having a central flange or projection to go "between the soles: and furthermore the fender is extended underneath and across the outer sole. which is not the case with my invention, by which the central flange is'disp-ensed with, and the toe-guard is fustend by screws going into the edge of the sole.
I make no claim to a metallic tip to he applied to thenpper ut its toe. What I claim as my improvement, ist The inetallicupper and sole-tip or'guari-as made, without any central flange, and with holes through it 'to receive screws, and errenged so that such screws may enter the outer ed ge of the sole when covered by such tip.
' BENJAMIN F. SPARROW.
