ELMA ETTA MORRISON, OF ANTHONY, FLORIDA.
FOLDHNG Ulli/IBRELLA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,181, dated July 23, 1901,.
Application filed March 29, 1901l Serial No. 53,466. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom] t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMA ETTA MORRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anthony, in the county of Marion and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Umbrellas and I do declare the following to be a f ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in umbrellas adapted especially for use on a bicycle; and it consists in the provision of a folding umbrella which is mounted upon the bracket-arm of a telescoping support, means being provided whereby the outer rim of the umbrella may be folded outward and upward by the provision of hinged braces, connections being provided for unfolding the outer rim of the umbrella and tilting the same. i
The invention will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claims, and is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, With the letters of reference marked thereon, form part of this application, and in which drawings- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved bicycle-umbrella and attachment for securing same to the frame of a bicycle. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the umbrella, and Fig. 3 is an edge view showing in dotted lines the umbrella with its outer portion folded upward. (Shown in solid lines.) Figs. 4f and 5 are detail views.
Reference being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the butt of the telescoping support, which has a band B, with apertured end B', which is adapted to fit over an eye A in said butt. This band is provided to fasten the butt of the support t0 the handle-bar or other portion of the frame of a bicycle. Telescoping within said butt, which is hollow, is a section C, which is provided with apertures which are adapted to be brought into registration with the apertures o, in the butt and to receive a pin A3 when it is desired to hold the sections eX- tended at diderent lengths. Telescoping within the section O is a smaller section O, which is held in an extended position by means of a pin O2, which may be passed through registering apertures in the two sections G and C'. Hinged to the upper end of the section O' is an elbow-joint D, which has rack members E mounted on one edge thereof, which are for the purpose of holding the stick of the umbrella when thrown back upon said elbow. This elbow-joint has brace-rods B', hinged together at their meeting ends and adapted to hold the elbow-joint at right angles to the extensible sections of the holder. Telescoping horizontally within the elbowjoint is a section F, which is held in an adjusted position by means of a thumb-screw f, which is mounted in the elbow-joint. Mounted at the outer end of the section F is the stick Gr of the umbrella, and in order to hold said stick erect a hook G is provided, which is secured at one end to the stick, while its hooked end is adapted to engage an eye or staple F in the section F.
The umbrella comprises the top H, having a central notch HX, which is secured to the hollow stick, as illustrated in the detail View Fig. 4c. To this notch are pivoted the inner ends of the jointed ribs H2, which have their outer ends recessed or bifurcated, as at h, Fig. 5, and to each bifurcated end of the ribs is pivoted a folding rib M, which is adapted to fold over on `the top of each jointed rib H2. Secured to each rib M is a clip M2, to one end of which clip a cord K is fastened, which cord passes up over the joint between the ribs M and H2 and passes through an aperture into and through the hollow stick Gr. (Shown clearly in Fig. 4.) The several cords K,which pass from the various ribs, may be connected together at their inner ends, forming a single rope, which is within convenient reach of the operator.
H designates a sliding ferrule Working upon the hollow stick, and said ferrule H is connected to the ribs H2 by means ot' braces L, which have pivotal connections at each end, as shown. To each of said clips is secured an end of a rope or cord K', which ropes pass to and through apertures in the notch H and down through same in a similar manner as'the cords K. The ends may be fas- IOO tened together, forming a single rope, which is within convenient reach of the operator. By pulling on the rope K,which extends down through the notch HX, it will cause the portion of the umbrella outside of the joints connecting ribs M and H2 to fold over on the inner porton of the umbrella, as shown in Fig. 3. When it is desired to unfold the outer portion of the umbrella, it may be done after the outer fold has been started by pulling on the end of the cord K which passes down through `the central notch HX.
To hold the umbrella from folding, a cord O is employed, which passes through eyes N in each rib M outside of the jointed end, and the two ends of the cord O are detachably held together by means of a snap-hook T and eye T". (Shown in Fig. 2.)
Vhen it is desired to close the umbrella, it may be done in the usual way, and to swing the closed umbrella back on the rack or rest formed by the lugs E on the elbow lD it is rst necessary to disconnect the hook G' and the stick will easily swing down.
By the provision of the elbow-joint and of the rotary movement which may be im parted to the section F it will be observed that the angle at which the umbrella may be desired Having lthus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in an umbrella, with a jointed stick, of a notch mounted thereupon and carrying folding ribs, the sections of said ribs being connected together by a rule-joint, the lower section of each rib having near its outer extremity an eye, a cord passing through each eye and. having means for fastening the two ends together, a series of braces connecting the ribs and the runner on the stick, whereby the upward fleXure of the jointed ribs is prevented when the frame is opened, as set forth.
2. The combination, in an umbrella, with a jointed stick, of a notch mounted there-V upon and carrying folding ribs, the sections of said ribs being connected together by a rule-joint, the lower section of each rib having near its outer extremity an eye, a cord passing through each eye and having means for fastening the two ends together, a series of braces connecting the ribs and the runner on the stick, whereby the upward ileXure of the jointed ribs is prevented when the frame is opened, cords secured to the outer hinged ribs passing through apertures in the notch, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
