HENRY S. HUNT, OF NEWARK, NEW YORK.
M ETALLIC RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,170, dated July 23, 1901.
Application filed December 5, 1899. Serial No. 739,239- (No model.)
To all whom it ntay concern:
Be it known that 1, HENRY S. HUNT, of Newark, in the county of Wayne, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metallic Receptacles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction and manufacture of pails, cans, or similar receptacles of tin or corrosive material, which is generally used, having more particular reference to the construction of the bottom.
My object is to produce a pail or receptacle provided with a non-corrosive bottom. I have observed by practice and experience that in the use of tin pails and cans after they have been used they are seldom wiped out dry, so that the moisture and dampness remaining upon the sides and bottom readily cause corrosion, and then, too, even if they are dried they naturally gather dampness and corrode, so that the bottom soon rusts out and renders the pail of no Value; and it is to the end of to in Fi 1 enlar ed.
a is a pail or similar receptacle having its sides constructed of tin or corrosive material in the ordinary way. The bottom 1) comprises the top portion 0, which is of zinc, aluminium, steel, or any other suitable or non-corrosive material, and is provided with annular beads d formed therein, as shown in the drawings. The lower side 6 of the bottom is constructed of tin or other suitable sheet metal, and is also provided with beads f upon its upper face and in alinement with the beads d in the upper portion of the bottom, and g is a layer of paper, fiber, felt or asbestos, or similar material interposed between the parts forming the bottom for the purpose of absorbing the moisture which may accumulate by leaking through the parts forming the bottom, and thereby prevent corrosion and decay.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A metallic receptacle having its bottom composed of an upper layer of non-corrosive metal, a lower layer of corrosive metal, and an intermediate layer of absorbent material, the several layers being in close contact throughout and the upper and lower layers being provided with registering annular beads whereby the intermediate layer is clamped and held.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 22d day of November, 1899..
HENRY S. HUN T.
