JOHN J. BROWER, OF WESTON, MICHIGAN.
GRAIN-ILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,536, dated July 16, 1901. Application filed November 17, 1900- Serial No. 36,873. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. BROWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weston,in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Mills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in what may be termed grain mills or grinders. It serves to readily and thoroughly grind or crush the grain, doing this in a way to effect the graduation of the grinding from the beginning to the end of the operation, also to control the feeding of the grain to the grinder or crusher and to regulate the degree of fineness or coarseness of the grinding of the grain.
It consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a cross-section. Figs. 2 and 3 are opposite side views. Fig. i is a front view, parts broken away, disclosing more particularly the means for controlling the pressure of the cover-section of the grinder in regulating the degree of fineness or coarseness of the grinding or delivery of the grain.
Latitude is allowed herein as to details, as they may be changed or varied at will without departing from the spirit of my invention and the same yet remain intact and be protected.
In carrying out my invention I construct the grinder or mill of a concave bottom section or portion 1, a cover concave section 2, preferably hinged or pivoted to the aforesaid section, and a cylinder or roll 3, hung or journaled in said bottom section or portion, with a pulley 3 suitably belted, as at 4, to a pulley 5 on one end of the shaft of a preferablycorrugated feed-roll 6, suitably hung or journaled in the front end of said bottom portion. The feed-roll and cylinder are driven in opposite directions to provide for the passing of the grain into the mill and after its entrance thereinto to subject it to the requisite grinding grinding or comminution of the grain or material, said cylinder or roll being likewise armed with a series of rasps or burs 3, but being uniform as to their fineness or coarseness. The burs or rasps of said roll or cylinder are similarly secured by screws, etc, as
those of the bottom section. The bottom sec tion has a pivoted bur or rasp 1 at the front, with its free edge opposed to the cylinder or roll 3 to vary the amount of feed of the ma= terial to and between the bottom concave sec tion and roll. To effect the manipulation of this gage or feed rasp or bur, it has at one end a projection 1, extending through a slot 1 in the side of the bottom section, to which is attached a link 1, connected to a hand-lever I arranged laterally of the mill.
At this same end of the mill or grinder, di- I rectly under the discharge or delivery chute 7, butarranged above the feed-roll,is a rod 8, with eccentrics 8 on its ends, having suitable link connection 8 with the hinged or pivoted cover-section 2 to provide for the varying or adjusting of said cover-section with relation to the roll or cylinder 3 to regulate the degree of fineness or coarseness of the grinding of the grain and the final delivery of the product from the mill or grinder. The rod 7 has fixed to it a lateral lever 7 to provide for the convenient actuation of the said cover-manipulating contrivance. The rasps or burs of the cylinder or roll 3 have their securing or fastening screws passed througl annular flanges 3 of said cylinder.
A feed-chute 9 is suitably arranged with relation to the feed roll 6 of the mill or grinder.
It will be observed that the bottom concave 1 extends from below the feed-roll 6 and around back over the top of the cylinder 3 and that the discharge-chute 7 has its receiving edge the full width of said feed-roll, but is formed with an inclined side Wall, leaving space for the feed-chute 9, whereby is utilized about three-fourths of the circumference of the cylinder at once in grinding.
By means of my invention it will be seen that the use of grinding or disintegrating rolls is dispensed with, obviating when it is required to renew the same the .shutting down of the mill or grinder until a new outfit of rolls is obtained and overcoming other drawbacks incidental thereto. It will be observed that therasps or burs of the bottom concave section being grooved or furrowed upon both sides, as above described, any one or more thereof when prematurely worn on one side may be removed and reversed and be exchanged for a like number of the rasps of cylinder or roll which may have become similarly worn, the latter of course being removed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a machine of the character described,
the combination of a grinding-cylinder, a
bottom grinding-concave, a feed-roll, a feedchute, andoa discharge-chute, said bottom concave extending from below said feed-roll, and around back over the top of said cylinder, and said discharge-chute having its receiving edge the full width of said feed-roll but having an inclined side wall leaving space for said feed-chute, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a grinding-cylinder, a feed-roll, a bottom grinding-concave extending from below said feedroll and around back over the top of said cylinder, a feedchute, a discharge chute with its receiving edge the full width of said feed-roll but having an inclined side wall leaving space for the feed-chute, a device for controlling the grinding action of said bottom concave, and mechanism for regulating the feeding of the material to said bottom concave, sub stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN J. BROIVER.
