Be it known that I, GEORGE CAMPBELL J AN- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residin gat Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Crushing and Grinding Mills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in crushing and grinding mills, and it especially relates to that class of grinding-mills adapted for operating upon coarse unground articles, such as corn on the cob, ear-corn with husks on, and similar material.
The object of my invention is to provide a mill of this character of simple construction which shall be capable of operating upon various materials and adjusted to suit the ma terial to be operated upon, the special object of my invention being to provide novel means for crushing and feeding the material into the grinding-plates I accomplish this object by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mill cm- Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same. Fig. i is a perspective view of the crushing-plate in detail. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 6 is a detail of a modification of the plate adjusting screw.
Like parts are indicated by similar letters of reference throughout the several views.
In the said drawings, A represents the hopper, B the grindingchamber, C and C the grinding-disks, D the main shaft, and E the driving-pulley, which parts do not differ materially from other grinding-mills of similar character.
On themain shaft D is located the crush ing-conveyer D, operating in a crushingchainber D which is formed eccentric to the crushing-conveyer D, the material being adapted to be fed onto that side of the crusher which is farthest removed from the walls of the crushing-chamber, in the manner herein- .after more fully specified.
Located .between the crushing-chamber D and the hopper A, in an intermediate chamber A, is an initial crusher F, journaled on a suitable shaft supported in bearings in the frame-work and geared to the main shaft through the medium of a spur-gearF and pinion W. This crusher F is preferably formed of steel, with flanges or wings a formed spirally thereon.
Located in the intermediate chamber A, at one side of and in proximity to the initial crusher F, is a hinged or pivoted plate Ill, )rovided on its periphery with a series of crushing protuberances Z) and b, which may be arranged on said plate in any desirable or suitable manner. Attached to the plate II at the top is a secondary plate H, adapted to project through a slotted opening in the walls of the intermediate chamber A, and thus close that portion of the intermediate chamber which lies behind the pivoted plate H, and prevent the material from falling therein. Extending through the walls of the chamber A, and adapted to bear against and adjust the plate H, is an adjusting-screw c, preferably provided with a locking-nut c and an enlarged head 0 ()n the back of the plate H, I preferably form guides or ways cl, adapted to form a slotted opening (1', T-shaped in crosssection, into which the head 0 of the adjusting-screw is adapted to be inserted.
The plate H is preferably hinged in the chamber A by means of a rod e, which passes entirely through said plate and is fastened in suitable hearings in the walls of said chamher, though any other suitable means of pivoting said plate may be employed, if desired.
As before stated, the walls of the crushingchamber 1) are arranged eccentric to the crushing-conveyer I). Theinitial crusher F is arranged upon that side of the intermediate chamber A which is above the mouth or opening of the crushing-chamber D The material to be ground is placed in the hopper A, is engaged by the initial crusher F, which operates with a shearing cut in connection with thecrushingprotuberanceson the hinged plate H, and thus thoroughlybreaks, crushes, or cuts the material fed thereto and passes it to the crushing-conveyer. The crushing plate H, it will be seen, is arranged at any angle in the intermediate chamber A, so that a large mouth or opening is formed in the upper part of said chamber between the crusher and plate, which decreases in size downwardly along said plate. The size of this opening and the distance between the crusher and plate may be regulated by the quantity of material acted upon as well as the size of the pieces into which it is broken or masticated. The arrangement of the walls of the crushing-chamber D eccentric with the crushing-conveyer, forms a similar mouth or opening at the side of said crushing-conveyer, so that the material fed thereto is acted upon graduallyas it is drawn down into said chamber and in contact with the wings or crushing protuberances on said crushingconveyer. In order to direct the material into this mouth or opening at the side of the crushing-conveyer, I provide the plate II with a downwardly projecting portion f, curved slightly toward the walls of said crushingchamber. The material which passes between the initial crusher and crushing-plate is thus fed directlyinto the mouth or opening at the side of the conveying-crusher, from whence it is drawn into and operated upon by said crushing-conveyer and carried to the grinding-disks, after which it is discharged in the usual manner.
The arrangement of the adjusting-screws c in the slotted way d permits the plate to be adjusted to or from the crusher F, and at the same time adjust itself to compensate for the rotary movement of the plate II about its pivoted center. The plate II is also preferably made separate and pivotally connected to the crushing-plate H for a similar reason.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a ball-and-socket joint between the plate H and the screw 0.
It is obvious that other well-known means for connecting the adjusting-screw to the plate may be employed, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1.. In a grinding-mill, the combination, with a main shaft, the crushing-conveyer, and grinding-disks, of an initial crushing device arranged between the supply of the material and the crushing-conveyer and consisting of a revolving crusher having spiralwings or blades, and an adjustable crushing-plate having crushing protuberances, and an auxiliary plate pivoted to the top of said crushingplate to guide the material between said crushing-plate and crusher, substantially as specified.
2. In a grinding-mill having a main shaft and grinders and a crushing-conveyer located in a crushing-chamber the walls of which are eccentric to said crushing-conveyer, so as to form an enlarged mouth or opening on one side of said crushing-conveyer, and an initial crushing device consisting of a revolving crusher and an adjustable crushing-plate, said crushing-plate being provided with an extended portion to guide the crushed material into the enlarged mouth or opening of the crushing-chamber, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with an initial crusher, of an adjustable plate having crushing protuberances, and an auxiliary plate pivoted to the top of said crushing-plate and adapted to pass through a slotted opening in the walls of the chamber in which it is-located, substantially as specified.
4:. The combination, with an initialcrusher,
of the pivoted plate H, auxiliary plate H, adjusting-screw 0, having the enlarged head 0 and a T-shaped slotted way d, substantially as specified.
5. In a grinding-mill having the grindingplates and orushing-conveyer on the same shaft, as described, said crushing-conveyer being adapted to operate in a crushing-chamher the walls of which are arranged eccentric thereto to form an enlarged mouth or opening at one side of said crushing-conveyer, a revolving initial crusher, and an adjustable crushing-plate, said plate being provided with a downwardly-extending guide to direct the material into said mouth or opening, sub stantially as specified.
6. The combination,in a crushing andgrinding mill having the grinding-plates and crushing-conveyer, as described,'of an eccentric crushing-chamber, an intermediate chamber, and a hopper, an initial crusher having spiral flanges, and a crushing-plate in proximity thereto arranged in said crushingchamber and provided with an extension H, said crushing-plate being arranged above the crushing-con veyer and extended downwardly to form a guide to direct the material to that part of the crushing-chamber farthest from said crushing-conveyer,substantially as specifled.
