BLOTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,313, dated July 9, 1901.
Application led October 12, 1900. Serial No. 32,855. (No model.)

Be it known that I, ROBERT J. GILLHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kissimmee, in the county of Osceola and State of Florida, have invented certain new and usefullinprovementsinBlotters; andIdo declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact decription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in blotters, and especially to a hand-blotter, which may be so attached to the hand as to serve as a rest and prevent the hand from coming in contact with the paper being written upon and always be convenient for ready use. The pad, while serving to steady the hand and prevent' cramping, allows of perfect freedom of the wrist and lingers.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, wth the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the improved blotting-pad as applied to the hand of the user. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the blotter.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the blot; ting-pad, which has a blotting-surface on its under face, while its upper portion may be of any suitable material-as cloth, celluloid, &c. Said pad has a narrow projecting portion A', the edges of which are concaved, as at B 'and C, while the edge of the portion opposite said narrow part is cut on the are of a circle, thel edge being so curved for the purpose of preventing the pad from interference with the iingers and hand of the operator. One edge of the pad is slightly lconcaved, as at E, and merges into a projecting portion of the pad F, which is designed when the pad is applied to the hand to project underneath the edge of the palm of the hand of the user adjacent to the wrist.
In the narrow projecting portion of the pad are connected the ends of the elastic or other cord H, which is formed into a loop, as shown,
'while through the apertures a in the widened part ot' the pad is passed the endless elastic cord K, forming a loop somewhat smaller than the loop formed out of said cord H.
In applying the pad to the hand the thumb of the operator is placed up through the loop made of cord H.- The pad is then swung over the back of the hand and brought over the outer edge of the palm of the hand and up against the palm, and the loop K is caught over the thumb. When thusapplied to the hand, it will be observed that the wrist and edge of the palm of the hand will rest upon the pad, thus preventing the paper from becoming soiled from perspiration, dac., and the hand is steadied and cramping prevented.
If desired, the shape of the pad may vary, the essential feature being that it should be so shaped as to form a sufficiently large surface, upon which the hand and wrist may rest without interference with the fingers in writing.
Having' thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A blotting-pad, comprising a body portion having a laterally-projecting wing A near its middle, an elastic cord passed through apertures at the end of said wing, and a releasingcord held in perforations near the center of the pad, said cords designed to be passed over the thumb in opposite directions, whereby said wing may be held over the outer edge of the hand, and its end over the back of the hand, the forward end of the pad forming a rest for the palm and three iingers of the hand, as set forth. l
