SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,158, dated July 9, 1901.-

Be it known that I, FRANK P. OADY, a citizen of the 'UnitedStates, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
My invention relates to improvements in dies for forming sheet-metal clamps for uniting the wire crossings of wire fences; and it consists in the combination, with male and female dies'and stationary bed, of stripping devices and in the details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings,and specifically pointed outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of the device. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the anvil-bed and working parts therein. Fig. 4 is a detail of the stationary or female die. Fig. 5 is a side view of the reciprocating male die and punch, and Fig. 6 is a view of the finished clamp.
In the views, 1 is the bed upon which the die 2 is secured in a groove 3.
4 4 are guides between'which the metal band 5 is fed to the dies. This is covered by the plate 6.
7 is the male die, adjacent to which is seen the cutter-knife 8 and punches 9 and 10, which register with openings 11 and 12 in the female die. By means of these punches the openings 12 and 13 are made in the sheetmetal clamps for the reception of the longitudinal fence-wire. The male die is attached to the vertically reciprocating head 14; of a die-press, and the bed of the female die rests upon the bed of the press.
It will be seen that the punches 9 and act upon the blank metal at the same time that the inner end of the metal' strip is being formed between the dies. Thus each blank is first punched, and these formed in turn as the band is fed into the machine. The alter ations of shape in the blank then bring the perforations into the positions shown in Fig. 6, the punches 9 forming a round and the punch 10 forming a longer and slotted opening, as shown at 12 and 13, respectively.
In order to hold the finished blank while the male die is being withdrawn, a perforated plate 15 is secured so as to project directly over the central portion of the lower die. This retains the clamp sufficiently for this purpose. Y
To remove each clamp as it is finished from the female die, a reciprocating stripper-bar 16 is employed, which slides in guides 17 in the bed of the machine and is provided with projecting arms 18 and 19, which push oh the finished clamp as the stripper advances into a hole 20 in the bed-plate. This strip= per is operated by means of a bell-crank lever 21, pivoted at22 upon the arms 23, mounted upon the bed-plate. The extremities of the rock-arm 24 and 25 are respectively inserted in openings 26 and 27 in the stripper and in the upper die-head, so that upon each downward motion of the die-head the stripper is withdrawn and on each upward motion the stripper is moved forward to remove the finished clamp. It will be seen that one arm, 18, is slightly higher than the other, 19, so as to engage the clamp at the difierent levels of the die.
The shape of the female die shows two rectangular depressions 30 and 31, one being higher than the other. The male die is correspondingly shaped, but with its central de pressions 28 deep enough to include the fixed stripper 15.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-= 1.
