TO ALL wnon IT MAY oonenuu.
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. MOMRNY, of Locust Point, in the county of Ottawa, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bub- Sleigh; and I do hereby declare that the following isa. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to rnake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this spccification,in which- Figure 1-is a side view of my improved bob-sleigh, partly in section to show the construction of the knee-joint. V
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken through the line z fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view of the same, taken throughthc line 3/ y, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate lili'o parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish a bob-sleigh or other sleigh or sled, so constructed as to adapt it to all kinds of roads, and to enable the beams and raves of the sleigh tobe readily removed from theknees and runners for convenience in storage, making the sleigh lirnber, strong, and durable; and it consists in attaching the knees to the beams by a joint strengthened by slotted braces, and in eonnecting the forward ends of the raves to the forward ends of the runners by a hook or hinge joint, as hereinafter more fully described.
A are the runncrsj B are the knees; C are the beams; I) are theraves, and E are the tongues of the sleighs. Upon the upper ends of the knees B are formed, or to them are securely attached, tcnons b, which enter a'nd work in notches o1 sockets 0 formed in the under sides of the beams C. These parts of the knees and beams may be strengthened and guarded against wear by in etallic straps b and 0 as shown in figs. 1 and 2. F are braces, the lower ends of which are attached to the front and rear sides of the knees B, and their lower ends to the upper edge-set the runners A, as shown in fig. 1. G are braces,'the upper ends of which are pivoted to the under side of the beams C, as shown in fig. 2. The lower ends of the braces G are slotted, as shown in fig. 1, and they are secured to the outer and inner sides of the knees B by bolts passing through the said slots. This construction allows the runners A to have a lateral movement enabling them to adapt themselves to the charactor of the road over which they are passing, and at the same time enables them to yield when an obstruction is encountered, thus guarding them against the liability tobo broken to which rigid runners are exposed. To the forward ends of the raves D is attached a hook, 1I,whieh hooks into an eye, I, attached to the forward ends of the runners A, as shown in figs. 1 and 3. The eye I may be formed in the upper end of the shoe J, or it may be formed in or attached to a strap attached to the forward ends of the said runners. By this construction, upon removing the bolts that secure the lower ends of the slotted braces G to the knees B, theraves D and beams C may readily be removed from the runners A, allowing the sleigh to be packed for storage in a much smaller space than could otherwise be done. The roller u of the tongues E may be pivoted to the forward ends of the runners A in the ordinary manner, or the pivoting-rod of said roller may enter notches formed in the forward ends of the said runners, and be kept in place by the raves D. This latter construction enables the tongue E and roller 0 to be detached from the runners A as soon as the raves and beams of the sleighs have been removed. I
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Attaching the knees B to thc'beams C by means of the slotted braces G, when constructed and arranged as described to allow a lateral and vertical movement to the runners, enabling them to adapt themselves to the irregularities of the ground, as'herein set forth.
2. The combination of the hook II and eye I with the forward ends of the faves D and runners A, sub. stantially as hcrein'shown and described.
GEO. 0. MOMENY.
