Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
L. LITTLEJOHN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 67,777, dated August 13, 1867.
To all whom it muy concern:
Be it known that I, L. LITTLEJOHN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a Y.new and useful Improvement in Bale-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following isfa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in metal ties for securing iron hoops on cotton and other bales and packages; and it consists of a stirrup, yoke, or bail, with an eye at one end and a hook at the other, in the former ot which a headed pin is hung that at its other end is headed and is engaged with the hook end to the yoke or bail.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvement in bale-ties is illustrated, Figure 1 being a side view of the tie with the hoop ends connected or hung to it; Fig.` 2, a crosssection in the plane of the line :c w, Fig. l, and Fig. 3 a view of one end to the tie.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents my improved tie, which is made in the form of a yoke, bail, or stirrup, to which B are the parallel sidearms, and G the cross-arm connecting the two together at one of their ends. One arm, B, to the yoke or stirrup, at its outer end, is made or provided with an eye, D, and the other with a hook, E, the two ends being connected together by and through a pin, F, that at each end is headed, so that while it cannot become detached from the eye to the yoke it is still susceptible of free play or swing therein, to enable it to be the more readily engaged with the hoop, as is shown in the drawings. The bale-hoop is looped at its one end over the end piece to the tie, and at its other over the pin that is swung or slid into the hook end to the tie.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is
The doubleheaded pin F, working longitudinally through the eye D in the arm B of the yoke, supported in position to receive the bands by means of the inner lower edge of the eye and its outerupper edge, and adapted to t into the loop E of the yoke, as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
L. LITTLEJOHN. Witnesses:
