WILLIAM oNIoNs', or IST. LOUIS, MISSOURI. Lam Patent No. cisedafmfay 14,1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALI] TIE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known thatf'I, WILLIAM ONIONS, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis, and State of ll/Iissouri,have
invented a new and useful Improvement in Cotton-Bale Tie; and I do hereby declare that the following is :t full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference beingshad to the' accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents-my improved bale-tie on the side that goes next the bale when connected.
Figure 2' is a section taken in the line :v x, fig. l. I
Figure 3 is a top or outside view when on a bale.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to an improved device for fastening the iron hoops on cotton and other bales, and
consists of a. strong piece of metal casting, at on the under side and rounded on the upper side, having acavity on the under side opening through the upper side, in connection with an eccentric piece of inetal which is secured to one end of the bale-hoop and passed .through the opening to lodge in the cavity in such manner that when the other end of the hoop is passed through thd tie the eccentric piece of metal shall act as a wedge and hold the hoop so that it cannot slip.
A is a cast-metal block having a dat side, in which is a wedge-shaped cavity opening through the upper side, as shown clearly in Iig. 2. B is an'irregularrwedge-shaped piece'of cast metal as wide'as the bale-hoop end C, to which it is secured by a. rivet, a, the end o f the hoop being bent around on one side and cut off at the larger end of the wedge-formed piece of metal B. The wedge-shaped metal piece being thus fastened to the hoop is inserted through -the opening in the upper side of the block A. The hoop is bent and the piece B is held in thecavity in the block A, loosely, however,'so that when slipped out a little way the other hoop end C may be inserted through the opening in the block A alongside of the end C to fasten the'hoop on a bale, where it is held vfast by the pressure of the wedge-shaped metal piece B, when the bale expands after being relieved from pressure.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The metal block A, in combination with the wedge-shaped metal piece B, secured to the bale-hoop end C, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth. V
` WILLIAM ONIOS.
