Description

@auch tetes jstrnt @Hite B. M. HALLy 0F SOUTH BEND, lINDIANA Letters Patent No. 67,755, dated August 13, 1867.
GRAINING MACHINE.
@the Stigehnle referrer: In in tlgcse ettert munt mit making part ui tigt samt.
'ro ALL wHoM 1T MAY ooNoERN':
Be it known that I, B. M. HALL, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Graining Machines; und I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the'construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,'making a. part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side View ofthe machine.
Figure 2 is a top view ofthe same.
Figure 3 is an end view.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the views.
A, fig. 1, is a. light frame, in which are arranged the gearing B B, iig. 3, and rollers C, D, and E, iig. 2, all the shafts of which have their bearings in the sides of the Frame. Passing around the several rollers is an endless belt or apron, G, which consists of rubber, gutta percha, cloth, leather, or any other suitable materiaL-on which is engraved or stamped any appropriate design for grainng. This npron is drawn tight upon the rollers by the ends of the frame being made adjustable, so that they may be extended by means of the screws l. It will be seen that the extreme ends I are attached to the frame by a lap-joint, J, as shown in {'ig. 1, a slot being cut through the end of the frame for the accommodation of the sliding of the screw when the attached ends are being extended. K,.fig. 1, is an adjustablejournal-box, by the men-ns of which the rollers L are forced against the feed-roller C by the thumb-screw M. A- spring may be introduced for this purpose if so desired. By this arrangement of gearing and rollers it will be evident that on`turning the gearing by the crank N the pressure of the rollers L upon the feed-rollers C, and between which the edges of' the apron pass, will carry the apron around over the rollers, and thus change the position of the apron t-o anydegree required by turning the crunk more or less. The design on the apron being Iproperly supplied with the paint or coloring material, is then transferred to the pail, tub, or other work to be grained, by holding and pressing the apron against it, the undir side of the frame being made curving, in order to adapt it to the curve of the Work. One impression having been taken, another ofa different design may then be given by simply turning the apron. By this means the design transferred may be slightly varied or wholly changed by turning the` machine more or less, as the nature of the engraving or design on the apron may determine. The roller E is intended as a wiper, for the purpose of removing all surplus coloring material, and for di'using it more equallyover the apron, and thus making the transfer more uniform in depth of color und order. This wiper is driven by the beltl 0 passing from the pulley P. The apron can be readily taken from1 the machine, and others substituted of dilerent designs, by simply drawing the screws from the cross-ties R, by which the sides of the machine are held together. This allows the side to be removed, so that the apron can be tiken off and another put on in its place, and thus any number of aprons and of diierent designs may be used, as the nature of' the work may require.
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The rollers C, D, E, and apron G, as arranged in combination with the frame A, provided with the adjustable ends I', in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
2. The arrangement of the gearing B B' and rollers L, in combination with the rollers C D E, and apron G, as and for the purpose set forth.
B. M. HALL.
