Nrrnn STATES MALVERN \V. BURDIO, OF STRAWN, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO TILLMAN H. SHEPHERD, OF SAME PLACE.
SELF-DUMPING CAGE FOR HOISTING COAL, 806., FROM MINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 677,175, dated June 25, 1901. Application filed October 19,1900. Serial No. 33,664- N 11105813 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MALVERN W. BURDIC, a citizen of the United States, residing at Strawn, in the county of Palo Pinto and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Self-Dumping Cage for Hoisting Coal or other Minerals from Shafts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in self-dumping cages for hoisting coal or other minerals, in which a cage working on upright guideshas a tipple-platform and is equipped with devices for holding a car on said platform; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a simple and easily-controlled dumping mechanism which can be set at bottom of shaft; second, to secure a positive action of the dumping mechanism and reduce the shock and strain commonly incident to the operation of self-dumping cages; third, to provide a firmer and more easily operated dog for holding car on cage-platform. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 is a vertical section of cage, showing framework, channel-guides, tipple-platform, car-dogs, levers, and shafts. Fig. 2 is a top view of cage and rim of mine-shaft. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of entire cage, showing a car held in place by dogs; Fig. 4, a detail view of one of the dumping-blocks and channel-guides. r
Similar letters represent similar parts throughout the several views.
The upper and lower beams A A, connected by two strong iron bars B B at each end, constitute the frame of cage. To the lower beam A are secured the boxes G G, containing shaft H, on which are mounted the tipple-supports O C, carrying platform D. The beams A A are at each end provided with continuous projections E E, working on and adapted as shoes to guides F F, which are secured to sides q q of mine-shaft. At each side of shaft H the guide F is parallel with and directly between two of the bars B B, which pass outside of said guide and, extending over the extremities of the shoes E E, are secured to the outer surfaces of the beams A A. The upper extremities of all four of the bars B are provided with eyes 19 p for attaching hoisting-cable.
Running crosswise at the middle of platform D is attached shaft K, to each end of which is secured a diamond-shaped block J, working in the channels I and M M of guides F F. At the junction of the channels M M and attached to the apex of the angular frog L is an antifriction-roller N.
Secured to the shaft K at a point between guide F and platform D is a reversing-lever 0, working in slot P in the upper portion of support 0 and provided with a bolt Q for locking said lever at the desired position.
The safety cardogs consists of curved clamps a a, attached to arms I) b, hinged at c c to ears 6 e, which are secured at f f to platform D. The arms I) b are hinged at g g to ears h h of levers t' i, which are pivotally attached at j j to platform D. The levers 11 t are connected by bars 70 it to the foot-lever Z, which is pivotally attached at m to platform D, at which point is secured cap or for restrict= ing movement of said lever.
The dumping-blocks J J, previously referred to and shown in detail in Fig. 4, are
reversible by lever 0, through which means said blocks can be thrown to pass through either of the diagonal channels or switches M M. The lever O can be set in the position desired by the operator at bottom of shaft, where car is loaded, and will cause the cage to dump at either side of shaft, according to the position of said lever, thus dispensing with the necessity of signals, as in the case of cages which are controlled at top of shaft by dumping-irons.
The channel-guides F F being of broader dimensions afford a better bearing-surface for cage and can be more securely fastened to sides of shaft than the six-inch square guide commonly used.
At the dumping-point, where the block J passes through the diagonally-connecting channels M M, the guides may be made of such material as is necessary to resistthe wear occasioned by friction at this point;
I prefer to carry out that feature of my iu Vention embodying the dumping-blocks and channel-guides in the manner shown in Fig. 4, where it will be seen that the flat faces of dumping-blockJ are bearing on sides of channel I of guide F, holding platform D in a rigidly-horizontal position. On encountering either of the diagonally-connecting channels or switches M M the blocks are released, allowing platform D to tip to the desired angle.
I am aware that prior to myinvention selfdumping cages Working on upright guides and having tipple-platform for car and dogs for holding car on platform have been made. I therefore do not claim this invention, broadly; but What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a self-dumping cage, the combination of tipple-platform, shaft attached crosswise at middle of said platform and diamondshaped blocks secured at each end of said shaft substantially as described.
2. In a self-dumping cage, the combination of tipple-platform, a shaft attached crosswise at the middle of said platform, diamondshaped blocks secured at each endof said shaft, upright guides with Vertical channels for said blocks, and diagonally-connecting channels or switches communicating with said vertical channels, lever for setting said blocks to pass through the desired diagonal channel or switch, all substantially as de= scribed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MALVERN \V. BURDIC.
