Be it known that I, ORAM A. NINOEHELSER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Me chanicsburg, in the county of Ohampaign and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bed-rests.

The general object of this invention is to provide a bed-rest with a hinged head and back rest proper, which carries a swinging brace adjustable in an adjustable support, whereby a double adjustment of the head and back rest proper may be obtained.

My invention also relates to details of construction and arrangement hereinafter appearing, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, on which like reference-letters indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention complete with parts shown in dotted lines; Fig. 2, a side elevation ready for use, partly broken away to show the crosspiece E; and Fig. 3 a side view showing the bed-rest in a folded position.

I am aware that there have been numerous rests invented in which a head and back rest proper has been adjustable; but, so far as I am aware, none of such head and back rests have ever been provided with an adjustable support pivoted to a fixed base in which a brace from the head and back rest proper was adjustably mounted, so as to have an adjustment of the head and back rest by simply adjusting its brace and also for adjusting; such head and back rest proper by adjusting the support for said brace by means of a pawl also pivoted to said base, thus providing for a twofold adjustment.

The letter A. represents a pair of side rails connected together by means of cross-bars B, constituting a base-frame. The forward ends of these side rails have bolted or otherwise secured thereto a pair of plates 0, which extend above the side rails sufficiently to permit of pivoting between them the sides 1) of a head and back rest proper by means of bolts E, which extend through the plates 0 and through the lower ends of the sides D. The upper end of these side pieces Dare connected together by a cross-piece E, or, if preferred, the frame of the head and back rest may be formed in one piece. A brace F is pivoted to the frame structure of the head and back rest proper, such brace having a cross-bar G, which is adapted to fit in serrations H in the adjustable support I. lVhen it is desired to adjust the head and back rest proper, the brace F is made to engage with the desired serrations or notches H. This will adjust the head and back rest proper within certain limits; but in order to still further adjust it I have pivoted the support I to the side rails A, as shown at J. This adjustable support is held in position by a pawl K, pivoted to the side rails A, as shown at L. This pawl consists of two sides M and a cross-bar O, the latter for securing the sides M together at their outer ends. The crossbar is adapted to fit in notches P on the under side of the adjustable support l. Thus without changing the brace F, by simply engaging the pawl K with one of the notches P in the adjustable support such support may be more or less elevated.

Referring again to the head and back rest proper, it will be observed that the sides D are provided with pins or buttons Q, arranged at intervals throughout a portion of the length of such sides and also along the under side of the cross-piece E. A piece of canvas E or other suitable fabric is adapted to be stretched.

across the frame of the head and back rest proper and buttoned over the buttons Q, so that it is held firmly in position and yet affords a comfortable back for supporting the head and back of a patient. Of course this fabric may be placed in position on the headrest frame in any other suitable manner. The letter R represents pillow-holders, consisting of loops of tape buttoned over buttons Q on. the cross-piece E, such loops passing around the pillow (not shown) near its ends, so as to hold the pillow in position.

The construction of my device is such that when not in use it may be folded, so as to occupy very small quarters. This is of great advantage in shipping, as it lessens the bulk and saves in the cost of transportation.

Referring again to the adjustable support,

it will be seen that the notches P are so formed that there will be no slipping between the support and pawl no matter what position the support may occupy. Consequently the head and back rest proper will always be held in the proper position to which it may have been adjusted.

In practice my bed-rest is placed upon a bed in such a position that a sick person may rest his head and back against the head and back rest proper, and by making the adj ustments above described the head and back rest proper may be given such an elevation orinclination as to exactly suit the desires of the patient, thus affording him a great amount of relief.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a bed-rest, the combination with a base-frame having a pair of side rails, of a head and back rest proper hinged to said side rails, and a support pivoted to said rails, a brace pivoted to said head and back rest proper, and adapted to engage with said support, and a pawl also pivoted to said side rails and adapted to hold said support in an elevated position, all substantially as shown and described.

2. In a bed-rest, the combination with a pair of side rails secured together by suitable cross-bars, of a pair of plates secured to one end of each of said side rails, a head and back rest proper pivoted between said plates, a brace pivoted to said head and back rest proper, a support pivoted to said side rails and having notches along both of its edges, the notches along one edge being adapted to be engaged by said brace, a pawl pivoted to the notches on the opposite side of said support, all substantially as shown and described.-

3. In a bed-rest, the combination with apair of side rails having a head and back rest proper and a support pivotally connected therewith, a pawl also pivotally connected with said side rails, and a brace pivotally connected with said head and back rest proper, said support having notches along its upper and lower edges, said notches being adapted to engage with said brace and pawl, and a fabric stretched across said head-rest proper and secured thereto,all substantially as shown and described.

4. As an article of manufacture, a bed-rest, consisting of a pair of side rails, secured to gether near their ends, a pair of plates secured to each of said side rails, near one end, a head and shoulder rest proper consisting of sides and a cross-piece, buttons secured to said sides and said cross-piece, a canvas buttoned over said buttons for a head and shoulder support, pillow holders also buttoned over a pair of buttons on said cross-piece, a brace pivoted to said head and back rest, a pivoted support connected with the side rails of said bed-rest with which said brace engages, a pawl also pivoted to said side rails for engaging with said pivoted support to adjust said support, all substantially as shown and described.
