RICHARD TARVIN GRAY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
SPITTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 676,746, dated une 1S, 1901.
Application filed March 20, 1901. Serial No. 52,007. (No model.)
To crZZ whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, RICHARD TARvIN GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Spittoons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to spittoons, and particularly to that class known as flushing.
The object of the invention is to produce a spittoon for use in cars and other places hav ing a floor in which it may be seated.
Y Furthermore, the object of the invention is to provide means whereby drafts through the opening in the floor in which the spittoon is seated may be prevented.
Furthermore, the object of the invention is to provide means whereby the bottom may be dropped vertically when the same is to be flushed and cleaned and restored to its normal position to close the opening.
Finally, the object of the invention is to produce a spittoon which will possess advantages in point of cleanliness, simplicity, durability, and inexpensive structure.
/Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying draw ings, forming part of this specicationvhere in like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which Figure 1 is a view of a section of a floor with theinvention seated therein and shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the spittoon; and Fig. 3 is a view in elevation with the bottom lowered and a discharge-pipe connected thereto, the said pipe being broken away.
In the drawings, A denotes the floor; A', a cylindrical casing having on its upper edge an outwardly-disposed annular flange A2, which rests on the floor and is secured thereto by screws A3, the said casing being seated in an opening in the floor and depending therebelow. The casing has formed in its wall a versurface, so that accumulation therein can be more readily dislodged. A lug B'l projects from the outer wall of the cylinder and rides in the slot of the casing, and the movement of the cylinder is limited by the length of the slot.
When it is desired to retain the bottom of the cylinder -flush with the lower edge of the casing for excluding drafts, the lug on the' cylinder is turned into the horizontal slot after the manner of a bayonet-joint and the parts are retained in place.
The upper end of the barrel is provided with a bowl O, having a depending flange C,which fits against the interior wall of the cylinder, where it is held by frictional contact. Thus the bowl may be removed for cleaning or when damaged is readily replaced. As the bowl is the only portion of the spittoon which is exposed to damage, this provision for its being replaced will be found a great advantage.
When the spittoon is applied to floors of buildings, a discharge-pipe D would be provided for conveying the deposits in the spittoon to a sewer or other like conduit.
The construction, operation, and advantages will, it is thought, be understood from the foregoing description, it being noted that change in the proportions and details of construction may be resorted to for successfully carrying the invention into practice without departing from the scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secu re by Letters Patent, .is-
1. In a spittoon, a casing seated in a iioor, said casing having vertical and horizontal intersecting slots, a-barrel slidable in the casing and having a stud sliding in the slots, a bottom for the barrel having a rounded upper surface substantially as described.
2. In a spittoon, a casing seated in a floor,
IOO
said casing having Vertical and horizontal ln testimony whereof I affix my signature slots, a barrel slidablo in the casing and havin presence of two witnesses.
ing a stud slidinfr in the slots a bowl havin i Y T a iange ttin'g the inner wall of the barrebl RICHARD TARVIN GRAL and held therein by friction, a bottom for the lVitnesses: barrel having a rounded upper surface snb- CHARLES HAUSER,V
