UNrTED STATES .PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. HALL, OF CLINTON, IOWA.
SHEET FOR CHECKING OR ACCOUNTING FOR BAGGAGEOR OTHER ARTlCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 676,648, dated June 18, 1901; Application filed August 2,1960. Serial No. 25,649. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W.HALL,a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheets for Checking or Accounting forBaggage or otherArticles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is the provision of a checking or account sheet to be used in connection with the transfer of baggage of any description by all classes of common carriers-such as Steamship-companies,railwaycompanies,transfercompanies,&c. whereby au accurate record can be kept of the receipt of articles for transportation and the disposition of trains and the articles of baggage traced and recovered in the event of going astray, while also furnishing a satisfactory means of settling disputes between connecting carriers. A
Having the foregoing objects in view, my invention consists of a checking or account sheet'for baggage of novel form, as fully set forth in the following description and recited in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the sheet furnished the outgoing train baggage-master at the terminus of the route, and Fig. 2 a view of (the sheet used by the train baggage-master to account for baggage taken on by him after leaving the terminus.
Referring now to Fig. l, the same shows a sheet provided with columns l to 14, inclusive, having cross-rulings 15, and the following headings for the respective columns, to wit: Where from, Kind of check or initials, Check here, Check here, Check Nos, Check here, Check here, Destination, Vhere left, Route, Description, Articles or package Nos, Destination, and Where left. At the upper left-hand corner of the sheet, above the columns, is a set of lines 16, arranged one above the other, preceded by the Words Train No, Going, and a place for the date to be filled in. At the upper right-hand corner of the sheet and Sealed.
and above the columns are lines arranged one above the other, each having the designation T. B. M. and Division,l as shown at 17. At the bottom of the sheet is a suitable line and designation 18, and another designation 19, where the receiving agents or the transfer-companys signature can be affixed. The spaces 16 are for the recording of the name of the line or the train-number and the direction in which it is going and also the date.
A number of lines or spaces are provided at this point, as the baggage may pass through the hands of several connecting carriers. The spaces 17 are for the name of the baggage-master and division or line upon which he runs, and similarly several spaces are provided, as the baggage may be carried over several divisions of a railroad, transfer-company, or other line. The columns 3, 4, 6, and 7 afford a suitable number of spaces for the private check-mark of any agent or train baggage-master for the purpose of checking up the sheet as to the articles in transit or left at the terminus.
Referring now to Fig. 2, the arrangement of the sheet is identical with that of the sheet illustrated in Fig. 1, except that in place of the columns 12, 13, and 14 columns 20, 21, 22, and 23 are provided at the right-hand side of the sheet, which have the following headings,to wit: Locked, Roped, Strapped,
The spaces for private checking are used the same as before.
n The sheet of Fig. 1 is intended to be filled in by the station baggage-master at the terminus of the road with data relating to such articles of baggage as are to be delivered to the train baggage-master having charge of a particular car. A carbon copy of this sheet is taken at the time and retained in his office at theA terminus. The original sheet he delivers to the train baggage-master,who checks it up and passes it on to the baggage-master taking charge of thc car on the next division of the road. The train baggage-master on the rst division is also supplied with blanks of the form shown in Fig. 2. After leaving the terminus with his train if he receives baggage at any way-station on his division he enters up on this sheet the data relating thereto. Colnmns 12, 13, and 14 of the sheet shown in Fig. l differ in their captions from corresponding IOS columns in the sheet of Fig. 2, because it is customary on common carriers to send out. from the terminus at frequent intervals packages of supplies and matters that are private to the management of the road itself, and these columns are especially adapted for the entry of data relating to such material, while, as there is no occasion for the recording of such data on the sheet shown in Fig. 2, because such packages are always sent out from the terminals, these columns are not employed on the sheet shown in Fig. 2.
The sheets can be detached, or they can be made up in blocks or books, as found desirable, and arranged for the taking of carbon copies for the use of the person making the report.
My invention affords a convenient and accurate means of accounting for baggage or other articles about to undergo or undergoing transportation and is a safeguard against losses and disputes arising therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclairn as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- K A sheet for checking or accounting for bag gage or similar articles, comprising parallel columns having cross-rulings and headings, as follows, to Wit: Where from; Kind of check or initials, Check No.; Destination; Where left; Routef Description; also appropriately-headed columns for receiving identifying data relating to the baggage, and appropriately-headed columns for receiving the private check-mark of agents or train-baggage-masters, said sheet also having a set of lines as follows: Train No. Going.. ..19. for the entry of trainnumbers, directions of movement and dates, and also having a set of lines as follows: .T. B. M. Division for the names of baggage-masters or agents and the lines over which they operate, and said sheet also having appropriately-designated places for the signature of the receiving agent or transfer company,
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
