WAY-BILL.

To all lwhom t may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK I-I. ORUMP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have made certain new and useful Improvements in IVay-Bills, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to interline way-bills employing coupons for the various connectand thereby being in condition to be immediately torn 0E, the necessary data being impressed thereon.

Ordinarily accounting way-bills are made to cover a shipment of freight, and impression or carbon copies are sent to each road over which the freight is to pass. The original way-bill accompanies the car to its destination, and each road makes its own records from the original way-bill.

An object of my invention is to provide an interline way-bill having coupons similar to a passage ticket, which furnishes each road over which the freight passes with sufficient information to enable it to procure the proper revenue accruing from the service performed.

A further object is to avoid the multiplicity of the reports now made by both agents and conductors to cover the movement of the car, which may be kept track of by my invention in the same manner as the passengers are.

A further object of my invention is to provide a way-bill having the form and number printed thereon so as to avoid numbering each way-bill made, as is now done.

A further object of my invention is to provide a way-bill having coupons in which certain forms can be used over different routes and to different destinations, these routes and destinations being designated by a particular number, which can be punched simultaneously through all of the coupons.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a face view of the original way-bill; Fig. 2 is e face view of the duplicate card way-bill; and Fig. 3 is a view of the reverse side of the duplicate card waybill showing the vcoupons attached on its lower half.

In carrying out my invention I provide an ordinary thin paper way-bill form, such as that shown at A in Fig. l, with certain Specification of Letters Patent.

data as the issuing road, date, route, contents, shipper, consignee, etc., etc., and detaehably secured thereto is a duplicate card .vay-bill, like that shown at B in Fig. 2, containing the same data on its upper portion with spaces thereon to be filled in by the use of carbon paper. The original waybill A is provided on its lower portion with spaces for the article, weight, rate, freight advances, prepay, etc. which is to be inserted after the original is removed from the duplicate card way-bill.

In the use of my improved way-bill each destination point as well as route over which the freight is to pass is arbitrarily designated by a numeral and it will be seen on examination of the two way-bills that spaces are provided for the destination number and name and the route number as well as for the roads and junctions.

Referring new to Fig. 3, it will be seen that there is a series of coupons C attached to the lower part of the reverse side D of the duplicate card way-bill, the upper part of the reverse side being used for the dating stamps. A separate form of Way-bill each having a form number printed thereon as shown in Figs. l and 2, is used according to the number of roads over which it reads; for example, if it reads over two roads, form 2 with two coupons attached is used; if over three roads, form 3 is used with three coupons attached, etc., etc., one coupon being provided for each road over which the shipment is to be moved. The coupons are numbered to correspond with the number of the road on the way-bill and are also provided with spaces showing complete movement of the shipment, car number, train number etc. On the outer edges of each coupon are tables, the table on the rightdenoting the destination number and that on These tables are so arranged as to register with the route and destination tables on the face of the duplicate card way-bill so that when the route number and destination number is punched on the latter the same data will be punched simultaneously through all the 1 coupons. rIhe coupons are secured to the lower half of the way-bill by wire stitch or otherwise and are perforated near the top to tear off easily.

Having thus described the arrangement of my improved way-bill, I will indicate the manner in which it is to be used. In

entering a. consignment of freight the data on the upper part of the original way-bill is filled out, the carbon impression sheet in the meantime duplicating the record upon the duplicate way-bill. The lower part however, of the original way-bill, e'. e., that containing lthe table of articles, weight, rate, etc. is filled out after the original is removed from the duplicate. The original way-bill is then press-copied and forwarded by mail to the agent at the destination of the shipment. Press copies are furnished the auditor of the issuing line, and a press copy is kept by the agent for file. After the removal of the original way-bill from the duplicate the destination number and route number are simultaneously punched in the card way-bill and through all the coupons which are attached to its lower half. The duplicate portion of the way-bill together with its attached coupon accompanies the shipments and each conductor punches and tears off his coupon and forwards it to the auditor who then has a complete record of the movement of the freight and also the car.

It will thus be seen that l have provided a way-bill from which all of the necessary information pertaining to the movement and accounting of freight may be obtained by each of the roads over which the freight passes but at the same time avoiding the necessity of making all the car and way bill reports ordinarily made by agents and conductors.

I claim l. An interline way-bill consisting of an original way-bill and a duplicate card waybill detachably secured thereto, the lower part of said duplicate way-bill being provided with numerical tables suitably designated for denoting the route number and the designation number and provided on its reverse side with a series of detachable coupons having tables suitably designated as route and destination tables arranged to register with the route and destination tables on the face of said duplicate way-bill whereby the route and destination may be indicated simultaneously by punching said registering tables.

2. An interline way bill consisting of an original way bill and a duplicate way bill detachably secured thereto, and having data and blank spaces on the upper part of its face the upper part of said original way bill having similar data and blank spaces adapted to register with the data and blank spaces on said duplicate way bill, the lower part of the face of said duplicate way bill being provided with tables suitably designated as route and destination tables, and a series of coupons secured to the reverse portion of said duplicate way bill and provided with similar tables arranged to register with the respective route and destination tables on the face thereof.

3. An interline way bill consisting of an original way bill and a duplicate way bill detachably secured thereto, and having data and blank spaces on the upper part of its face the upper part of said original way bill having similar data and blank spaces adapted to register' with the data and blank spaces on said duplicate way bill, the lower part of the face of said duplicate way bill being provided with tables suitably designated as route and destination tables, a portion containing said data and blank spaces extending down on the lower half of said duplicate way bill between certain of said tables, and a series of coupons secured to the reverse portion of said duplicate way bill and provided with similar tables arranged to register with the respective route and destination tables on the face thereof.
